🔔 Major NHS update brings menopause into routine health checks 🔔

This looks like fantastic news doesn’t it?! However, I have questions & thoughts 🤔

Have you had one of these Health Check/MOTs? I’ve had two now. 10 years apart mind 🤣

Weight, p*e, a tick box list of questions (please don’t dare to discuss or disclose anything not on that list 😅) takes less than 10 minutes and not with a GP. A quick follow up call or appt a week or so later and - hopefully - nothing to worry about🤞🏼

Our hormones start to decline from age 35, why are we waiting an extra 5 years?

Will the nurses that currently do these check ups be fully trained and able to prescribe HRT and lifestyle advice? 🥦🏋🏽‍♀️

Or will women be pushed back to their GPs?

Will all GPs be fully trained in peri, very and post-Menopause matters by then??

What are your thoughts?

It’s obviously a much needed progression and recognition, will it help as much as we hope it will?

PS - a male friend said recently “If we had to go through all this, it’d have been sorted years ago!” Ain’t that the truth! 😘

So many women speak to me about being prescribed antidepressants instead of HRT when they first go to their GPs with peri menopause symptoms such as brain fog, mood swings, feelings of low self-worth, sadness and even suicidal ideation

Not all GPs have educated themselves in the maelstrom of Menopause symptoms and so will reach first for what they do know about - medication that acts as a sticking plaster. Of course, antidepressants are literal life-savers for many people but if taken unnecessarily, can create bigger problems further down the line.

If you feel that this has happened to you, this article is an interesting and useful read that you may want to take in to your next appointment!

Today has been and this year’s theme is Lifestyle Medicine 💗

Which to me, means more than just HRT, Supps, Broccoli, Movement & all the damn Water! Of course, these are all massively important👌 however, making time for JOY and connecting with others is equally so 🫶🏽

Thursday I was invited by Vicky back to HSL Chairs in Batley to provide 1:1 and small group support to 8 of her colleagues, covering a broad range of personal issues, situations and concerns 💞 (If all company bosses were like Vicky we’d be sorted ladies 🙌🏽)

Friday morning was with our regular Walking & Running Fit Five Towns group amble around the beautiful Pontefract Park - chatting, laughing, moving in nature 🍂

Friday evening at WX Wakefield line dancing, badly 🤦🏼‍♀️ in a dress 😳 and witnessing what must have been a Menopause inspired routine
👉🏼👆🏼👇🏼👈🏼 🤣👏🏼 in fab company with food and a pint!

And of course this morning with my and Squads - all making time for themselves and each other 🥰 🥰

✅ It’s eas-ier of course but, this is my job
✅ Like all of you with jobs, I still have to make the time and make myself, do for myself what I say to you to do

Is it always easy and do I always want to? Absolutely not 😅

Can I give myself reasons why I can’t?
Name them! 😂

Do I know how much better I’ll feel afterwards and remember My Why? 💯%

Our lives are busy. Our lives are complex. Our lives, bodies and minds can be royally f # over by Peri, Very & Post Menopause - for sure 🤯

But remember who you still are 👑 who you are still to become 💪🏽 and who you want to be around for, for as long and as well as possible

And in case you’re wondering (and have got this far)…tomorrow morning I’m having a lie in, after my 4am Meno P*e of course 🙄🤣

Sleep is THE best lifestyle medicine of them all, trust me 😘

Got chatting to a new lady that joined one of our walks last week and, sadly, it reminded me of this Lowry piece (I know, I thought he only did Matchstick men, cats & dogs too!)

Now in her late 60s, she’d been a chubby kid. And has spent many, many years since trying to maintain a certain weight (very slim)

She’s done it all. All the restrictive diets, all the ‘clubs’, all the cardio and guess what? This last few years, she’s grown a belly that she just can’t shift 😩

A slave to the scales (don’t get me started) the number hasn’t changed and she’s more than confused, she’s upset. Really upset.

“I’m thinking of starting Slimming World” This woman has no weight to lose - if anything she could do to build some muscle going in to older life 💗

I asked her; is your tummy hard & tender or is it really wobbly?

You guessed it. Hard & tender is inflammation, not fat. That’s why the scale isn’t showing additional weight 😃

A restricted calorie diet is not always the answer.

As we get older we need all the macros to maintain good physical, mental and gut health

Plus;

😴 good sleeping patterns to reduce stress and maintain healthy cortisol levels

🌳 time outdoors to move and get Vit D (supps essential October-March minimum)

🥦 don’t cut out Carbs - learn the difference between natural & complex, then energise your body the right way 😉

🧁 don’t demonise or humanise foods. Food is kinda necessary, they’re not “good” or “treats” it’s just that some foods give us more nutrition than others.

⚖️ please please, do not judge yourself by the number on a probably wonky machine 🙏🏼 being healthy, strong, fit, happy and present…lasts a helluva lot longer than a size whatever

🖤 And finally, you DO NOT look to others, like you think you do. Most of the people you know admire you for something they never tell you, it’s true!

Do you really want to spend the rest of your adult life feeling like this painting?

No you don’t, trust me 😘
