Makaton training anyone? 👇🏻

Are you interested in learning Makaton?
Need to use Makaton to communicate more effectively with loved ones?
Need to use Makaton for your work?
Not sure what Makaton is, and want to find out more?

If you've ever seen Mr Tumble on CBBC's Something Special, then you will have seen Makaton in use!

Makaton is a language programme which uses symbols, signs and speech to enhance communication with people with special educational needs and disabilities.

The language programme supports the development of essential communication skills such as attention and listening, comprehension, memory, recall and organisation of language and expression.

Being able to communicate is one of the most important skills we need in life. Using Makaton to communicate with our students enhances their experience and minimises the risk of confusion and misunderstandings.

We have a small number of spaces available on our Level 1 Makaton training workshop taking place at Derwen College on Tuesday next week - 23 July. It's a full-day workshop and costs £77 per person.

We are also running a Level 4 workshop for those who have already completed Levels, 1, 2 and 3.

It fills me with such joy to watch our kids happy stim.

Seeing happy jumps, spins, flaps.
Joyful singing, humming, movements.

It doesn’t matter if it looks different.
It doesn’t matter if it falls outside the realm of neuronormativity.

Unless a stim is harmful, you don’t need to redirect it.
Our stims are important. They’re useful.

Stopping a kid who is quietly stimming in a classroom is going to reduce their capacity to engage in learning. That’s an outcome that no one wants.

Rather that trying to stop the stimming, and rather than labeling it as ‘distracting’, teachers can help the whole class understand that different people learn in different ways.

For plenty of us, stimming helps us learn.

Let’s normalise that.

🌟 Aquapark SEN Sessions 🌟

We now have dates for May's SEN aquapark sessions, and will be continuing to add more sessions as we head towards the summer months.

-5th May at 11:30am
-11th May at 12:30pm
-12th May at 11:30am

Our SEN aquapark sessions offer a more relaxed environment for children or adults who have special educational needs. With a small capacity, and an increased lifeguard to child ratio, these sessions are designed to make the customers feel more at ease.

We offer free carer tickets for these sessions.

You can book them online at www.alderford.com and go straight to "book" and select the correct date.

The BBC is seeking individuals with ADHD or dyslexia to take part in a new Inside Our Minds documentary with Chris Packham.

As part of the documentary, Chris will meet two people with ADHD and two people with dyslexia to discover how the conditions have shaped their lives, then each person will work with a team of filmmakers, animators and composers to make a short film about what's really going on in their mind.
