Today is World Pharmacist Day, and we are celebrating by giving out a dose of gratitude for our pharmacists!

World Pharmacist day is celebrated every year on 25 September, marking the founding of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) in 1912. It’s a global tribute to the essential role pharmacists play in healthcare — ensuring safe medication use, improving patient outcomes, and supporting public health initiatives.

The 2025 theme for the day is “Think Health, Think Pharmacist”. This emphasizes how pharmacists are central to building strong, sustainable health systems—especially in the face of global challenges like antimicrobial resistance, climate change, and economic pressures.

Here you can see a photo of our fabulous and smiley pharmacy team here at RJAH, as well as a graphic with some numbers showing just how busy they are and just how integral they are to patient care.

A big thank you, also, to our League of Friends, who have kindly provided the team with meal vouchers to mark the day!

Our Annual General Meeting takes place later this month on Monday 29 September - and everyone is invited!

The event is taking place in the hospital's Lecture Theatre (which can be found at Location 11 on our Main Corridor). If you can't attend in person but would like to watch and listen in virtually, then there is also an option to join us via Microsoft Teams.

Attendees will get to hear an overview of the 2024/25 year, as well as a forward look at what is next for us in the months ahead.

We'd love to see you there!

This afternoon, the funeral of HRH Duchess of Kent has been taking place at Westminster Cathedral. The Duchess, who was our Patron, sadly died earlier this month on 5 September.

Her Royal Highness made many visits to our hospital - indeed she made nine trips to our Gobowen site between 1970 and 1997. She is pictured here, greeting staff and patients, on one of those visits in 1985.

On behalf of all our staff and patients, we send our condolences to her family and loved ones and give thanks for her decades of service. May she rest in peace.

From Monday 22 September, RJAH will be making decaf the default on all inpatient wards – as part of our efforts to reduce falls and keep patients safe ☕

Caffeine can increase trips to the toilet, which is a known risk factor for falls, particularly for older adults.

The move follows our successful Taste the Difference challenge, where staff, patients and visitors sampled decaf drinks and learned more about the benefits.

We're delighted and proud to share the results of the latest Adult Inpatient Survey from the Care Quality Commission which has named us as one of only eight Trusts (out of 134 surveyed) to be delivering results which are "much better than expected"!

The survey details show that our hospital wards and rooms were rated the cleanest in the country - for the fifth year in a row.

We also rank second nationally for overall patient experience, kindness and compassion, and respect and dignity.

Thank you to all our patients who took part and gave their feedback.

On Tuesday 2 September, staff, volunters and patients at RJAH came together to mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day (Victory over Japan Day).

The service was a moment of reflection and remembrance, honouring the courage of those who served, remembering all who lost their lives, and giving thanks for the peace we enjoy today.

2025 marks the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, when Imperial Japan officially offered its surrender to mark the beginning of the end of World War II. The formal ceremony occurred on 2 September 1945.

Congratulations to Cath Roberts, Sister on the Midland Centre for Spinal Injuries, who has been presented with a prestigious Cavell Star Award – a national award initiative for nurses who go above and beyond for their colleagues and patients 🌟

At 14,000 feet in the air, most people would be feeling the fear – but not Malcolm Moran. The 75-year-old amputee and military veteran took on a tandem skydive to raise funds for our Veterans’ Orthopaedic Service 👏✈️

Malcolm decided to take on the challenge to give back to RJAH, after being a patient for several years - undergoing one hip and two knee replacements, as well as a leg amputation.
