We're so proud of two of our paediatric orthopaedic surgeons, who have returned from a fortnight at sea – helping to change the lives of African children aboard a unique floating hospital.

Mr Nigel Kiely and Mr Rob Freeman volunteered on the vessel off the coast of West Africa, working with the charity Mercy Ships to help children with severe lower limb deformities.

The charity runs two ships, which have been fitted out with operating theatres, recovery wards, intensive care units and rehabilitation spaces. Mr Kiely and Mr Freeman were aboard the Global Mercy, which was docked in the port of Freetown, the capital city of Sierra Leone.

During their two weeks on board, they operated on 20 children who needed life-changing surgery that they would not have otherwise been able to access.

As a reminder, some Resident Doctors will be on strike from today (Tuesday 7 April) until 7am on Monday 13 April as part of industrial action by the British Medical Association (BMA).

We would urge patients with appointments on one of these five days to attend as planned unless you hear otherwise from us.

We are contacting directly any patient whose appointment needs to be rescheduled as a result of strike action. If you do not hear from us, you should therefore assume your appointment is not impacted and will go ahead as planned.
