Not sure about your vaccination status? Here’s how to check...

If you're unsure whether you’ve had your recommended vaccinations, you can check online using the NHS App or SystmOnline. Your vaccination history is usually listed in your online GP record.

Log in to the NHS App or SystmOnline and look under Your health record. Some older vaccinations may not appear online depending on when online record access was enabled. If anything appears to be missing or doesn’t look right, please get in touch and we’ll review it for you.

If you can’t access the NHS App or SystmOnline, you can contact us using Anima by submitting an administrative request. Our team will review your record and let you know what we find.

If you’re unable to use online services, please call the practice. If possible, calling in the afternoon can help as our phone lines are usually less busy. A member of the team can check your vaccination history and confirm your status.

If we find that you haven’t received the recommended vaccines, or if your record is unclear, we’ll discuss this with you and arrange any catch-up vaccinations you may need.

You can find full details of routine NHS vaccinations and when they’re offered here:

Student nurse Annie Boyce has been on a whirlwind journey since she joined us, transforming both mentally and physically on her journey to become a practice nurse.

She always had ambitions to further her career and, with the support of colleagues and family, she is three quarters of the way through her journey to registered nurse status. She has also lost five stone after deciding that she needed to adopt the healthy eating and exercise advice she gives to patients!

Annie worked in a hospital A&E department for almost ten years and really wanted to make the move to a GP practice. She was at Oundle Medical Practice for around a year before embarking on her Nurse Associate qualification, involving two years of remote university study, practical tasks and placements in other health and care settings. Just six months after passing that, she decide to continue her studies for the final push to become a registered nurse.

It has been gruelling as Annie has combined her full-time job with hours of study, essays and her family. She said: ‘It has been quite a journey! I knew I wanted to be a practice nurse, and I am so grateful to be given the opportunity to do it so soon after my Nurse Associate qualification. I do look back and wonder how I have done it, but I am proud because it was a lot!

‘I had been a HCA in A&E for a long time and felt like I knew a lot already, but primary care is a whole new world and I love how much I have learned. I like the challenge, the responsibilities and the next step up.’

Annie has been mentored by nurses Leanne Thomson and Debbie Rust and is appreciative of the time and advice they have given her. She is now about to go on a 16-week hospital placement at Kettering General Hospital, working in coronary care and A&E.

She said: ‘We have quite a structured working day here, so you generally know how your day will pan out, but the hospital, and particularly the shift work will be very different. It will be a challenge but I am looking forward to completing it.’

Annie says that her patients have been very encouraging. ‘They are the best. I have always had a great rapport with them. They have obviously seen the change in my uniforms through the process as I started in blue, went to purple, and now I am in the white of a student nurse. They ask “you will be staying won’t you? You are not going anywhere else?” I say, “no, this is for you guys!”

‘They are so appreciative. It makes it worthwhile. I do it for them because I want to be better. I love coming to work, I love the people and the patients, even though some of them struggle to recognise me as I have now lost so much weight, so for me it is about a whole lifestyle change, and that has been reflected in my career as well. I genuinely love what I do and definitely chose the right career!’

Lakeside Research, which runs clinical trials, has been boosted by the addition of two new Partners, Dr Rex Sarmiento and Dr Sophie Reiter. Dr Sarmiento has been with the team since 2016 and has now decided to step into Partnership, while Dr Reiter is experienced in research and new to the team.

Dr Sarmiento first got involved as a student in his native Philippines. His initial project was testing the antibacterial properties of kapok tree bark, earning his first ever research award as a teenager and firing up a love for research.

He trained as a doctor, then came to the UK to work in hospitals before becoming a research physician in Birmingham, Cannock, London and Leeds. He has been involved in research at the Corby site for the past ten years, working as a crucial part of the team.

Dr Sarmiento said: ‘The turning point for the unit was the pandemic. When no vaccine was available it was good to be able to be in the forefront of Covid vaccine studies, to make a difference and to have been part of the research behind successful drugs. Being at the forefront of clinical research gives you a real feeling of accomplishment and pride.

‘Partnership is a step up in terms of responsibility. I have nearly finished my Masters in Clinical Trials and so, with my training and experience, I hope to bring more to Lakeside and the Research team.’

Dr Sophie Reiter’s passion is to ‘make research accessible to everyone’ and champion studies that have the most beneficial effect for patients locally and nationally. As well as being a GP and Principal Investigator, she is also a regional lead for Primary Care Research in the East of England, supporting workforce development and research capacity and capability.

She has been involved in many academic and commercial studies involving vaccines, cardiovascular disease, lipid disorders, and cancer screening and said: ‘What really drives me is making research accessible. I believe that all patients should have access to the newest treatments, innovations and research opportunities as a part of routine General Practice.

‘To provide the highest standard of care, we prioritise research studies that have the potential to directly benefit our patients, while also contributing to the wider research community. For example, if we identify a high prevalence of COPD or cardiovascular disease within our patient population, we actively seek to participate in research studies focused on those conditions. The team has been incredibly welcoming, with a strong sense of camaraderie, and I am really looking forward to being a part of it.’

The Public Health Team at North Northamptonshire Council is aiming to address a fall in local vaccination rates by sending nurses to go into the community to talk to parents and carers about the importance of vaccinating children and young people.

We were delighted to have our first face-to-face meeting with Chairs and officers of our Patient Participation Groups. They, and Chief Executive Jessica Bawden, regularly connect via Zoom but this was the first time that all met in person.

It was an opportunity to reflect on the past year and to continue working with our PPGs on service improvement. A recent highlight has been the implementation of Total Triage which has received positive reviews and patient feedback.

Jessica Bawden also spoke about future areas of focus while the PPGs gave updates about their work including patient liaison, drop-in events and health awareness talks.

Thank you to everyone who came along to the meeting or who volunteers in our Patient Participation Groups. You help us to shape our services and sites.

It’s Brew Monday 🍵

Brew Monday takes place on the third Monday in January. It’s about connection, not pressure! A reminder to pause, check in, and remember that none of us have to face things alone.

January can be a difficult time for many people. Brew Monday encourages small, simple actions that can make a real difference, such as:

▪️Sharing a cup of tea or coffee with someone
▪️Checking in with a friend, family member, or colleague
▪️Taking a proper break and looking after your own wellbeing
▪️Making time for a short conversation, even just a few minutes

You don’t have to share anything personal, and you don’t need to have the right words. Sometimes just being there, listening over a brew, is enough.

Today is a good reminder that small moments of kindness and connection matter. If you can, reach out to someone, or allow someone to reach out to you.
