With the air turning colder, we would like to give a gentle reminder that Pharmacists are not able to prescribe antibiotics for chest infections under the Pharmacy First service.
If youโre experiencing mild symptoms such as a cough, cold, sore throat, or sinus congestion, your pharmacist can assess you and offer appropriate advice or over-the-counter treatment. However, chest infections often require a clinical assessment to determine if antibiotics are needed.
You should contact your GP or NHS 111 if you:
Have a high temperature or feel generally unwell
Have had a cough for more than 3 weeks
Are coughing up blood or rust-coloured phlegm
Have underlying conditions such as asthma, COPD, or heart disease
Experience chest pain, shortness of breath, or confusion
Pharmacy First is there to support you with common conditions, but serious or persistent symptoms should always be reviewed by your GP.
