Hi everyone - just wanted to post to say that I am back in business and open for referrals again.

I will be predominantly working online, but may have availability for a select few in person, outdoor, “walk and talk” clients in central Oxford.

If you’re interested or know someone who could benefit from talking therapy you can contact me via my website: emmasmithcounselling.co.uk

My approach is based in psychodynamic psychotherapy but I am also trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy. So I am client led in terms of what we talk about and how we will approach what comes up together.

Oxford Wellness Running becomes Oxford Walk and Talk. And I try and show you a heron. Spoiler - you can’t really see the heron.

Autumn is here - for some a favourite season, for others a difficult time when the nights start drawing in. But it feels like a time of change either way. For me it’s the former, I love the drop in temperature, the colours and the crunchy leaves.

If you, or someone you know, would like to see what the “run walk talk” approach is about, please get in touch. I currently have some spaces for some walking clients.

Autumn seems to have arrived over night in Oxford, with that new season, “back to school” air. If you’re feeling like this might be a good time to address issues that have had to be swept to one side over the summer, then get in touch.

I have some dedicated walk and talk spaces available, and you can contact me via my website (link in comments).

Boys don’t cry*

Boys are told to “man up” or “grow a pair” and that “boys don’t cry”….that the strong silent type is something to aspire to. Giving the message that mental health issues are weakness and leaving generations of men feeling unable to open up when they are struggling.

Outdoor therapy/counselling/runwalktalk can help and sometimes feel less of a leap than sitting in a room with a therapist.

The outdoor setting and the movement can free you up to talk. Akin to a hike or run with a friend. The therapist/counsellor is alongside you - companionship without pressure to bare your soul can sometimes be what is needed to release “stuff” you’ve been holding onto.

And if you don’t feel like you want to talk to a woman, or maybe a guy just feels more like it would suit you better that’s totally fine too. There are resources out there like , and , all of whom are fantastic. Just know that you can talk and that you are not alone.

But if you’re local-ish to Oxford and you’d like to try Outdoor Therapy with me send me a DM or go to my website for more info.

A selection of things you might see on a walk and talk session.

Sometimes this is what it’s about. Peace, walking, noticing. Just being outside in nature alongside another human.

Sometimes my clients want to talk from the moment we meet and other times it’s as important to just be. There’s usually movement but sometimes there’s as much value in stillness.

Please get in touch if you would like to know more.

I saw a post the other day that has stayed in my mind - it was about how “time is going to pass anyway”. Which sounds a bit disheartening, but what she meant was that in, for example, a years time we could look back on this moment and know we’re closer to our goals, or look back and wish we’d started the change back then.

I was reminded of this by bluebell season coming around again and thinking about how beautiful and inevitable they are... no matter what’s going on for us the bluebells arrive each year unaffected by us!

So perhaps you might be at a stage where you feel there is something you could do with working out by talking to someone, and perhaps the idea of doing that outside and moving might appeal.

If so you can contact me via the oxfordwellnessrunning.uk website and find out more about how I work.

As well as longer term work, I can also do one off sessions (at the same price) if you would like to try it, or just talk to someone for an hour.

I love this sign on the currently closed Zodiac/O2- it’s a very very long interval, but it IS an interval.

Live music will be back, socialising, and races and group runs and hugging people will come back.

But maybe some things won’t and that’s ok too.

During this interval maybe you’ve let go of some things that weren’t in your best interest - a friendship that had become more of a negative in your life than a positive, a reassessment of who or what was really important to you, a career change, forced or chosen.

My hope is that there will be some positives to come out of all of this too. ❤️❤️❤️

I spoke to inloco childcare about ways in which parents can look after themselves during difficult times to prevent burnout. There are some other great ideas in here too if running isn’t your bag. 💙

I’ve been mulling over some thoughts about anxiety and anger recently. It feels as though, the closer we get to some way out of lockdown and even with more people getting vaccinated, there doesn’t seem to be any abatement in the anxiety we’re all feeling. And recently there seems to be a lot of rage and blame added into the mix. A lot of people seem to be lashing out and wanting someone to blame. It seems particularly online and maybe that’s because there isn’t that same boundary.

With spring coming and things hopefully improving, on the surface we have more reasons to be hopeful but for some of us it doesn’t feel like that. And we can feel even more isolated when it seems like everyone else is celebrating and raring to go! Maybe that’s just something to sit with and find a way to be ok with - that it’s ok to still feel scared and anxious and not raring to get back to the pub or if we’re really anxious about schools reopening. There may be social anxiety as none of us have been in real life groups for such a long time. And I guess I’m saying if you’re feeling like that too, it’s ok and you’re not alone in it.

Spring is definitely trying to make the effort to arrive in University Parks. Seeing the snowdrops and crocuses coming through always makes me feel more hopeful. But at the same time it’s a reminder that we’ve been in this incredibly difficult situation for nearly a year now, and have all been coping with the constant but differing levels of anxiety for a long time. Anxiety, stress and even grief.

Depending on where you’re reading this please do feel free to share this page/instagram account with anyone who you think might be interested in this walk/run while we talk approach. I have some spaces at the moment.
