Kintsugi is a Japanese art of using gold to repair broken pottery and re-imagine new works of art which have incredible beauty and value. This is a beautiful analogy of the recovery journey with the gold representing your healing and your strength. The glue takes time to harden, just as you will take time to heal. This experience is unique to you and this process enables you to honour and recognise your journey. In the words of Rumi- our “wound is the place where the light enters you”.

Another way breathing is able to reduce histamine is through production of nitric oxide. Whilst was previously thought to be hazardous, it has since gained recognition of its extremely vital roles within the body.

One of the best ways to produce nitric oxide is to nose breathe. For more information on the physiology between this, sign up to access our upcoming course in the link in our bio!

Did you know exercises can help regulate the autonomic nervous system, which plays a crucial role in our body's response to stress?

The has two branches - the and nervous systems. The sympathetic nervous system activates the body's "fight or flight" response, while the parasympathetic nervous system activates the body's "rest and digest" response.

In today's fast-paced world, many of us are constantly in a state of sympathetic activation, leading to chronic stress and inflammation in the body.

One breathing exercise that can help activate the parasympathetic nervous system and reduce stress is the 4-7-8 breathing technique. To do this, inhale through your nose for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 7 seconds, and exhale through pursed lips or your nose for 8 seconds. Repeat this cycle for a few minutes

Exercise is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle, but for those with MCAS, it can be challenging. After exercise, it's important to regulate the autonomic nervous system to promote relaxation and recovery. Some ways to incorporate this include:

1. Slow breathing: Take a few minutes to focus on your breathing. Try inhaling deeply into your lower chest and tummy through your nose for a count of 4, hold for a second or so, and then exhale for a count of 6.

2. Meditation: Find a quiet place to sit or lie down and use a guided meditation to help you relax.

3. Cold water immersion: Consider taking a cold shower or ice bath after exercise.

Remember, it's important to listen to your body and do what works for you. Our next post will delve into the benefits of breathing techniques for individuals with and

Individuals with mast cell activation syndrome and histamine intolerance should exercise with care as this is known to be a trigger for the release of mast cell mediators, including histamine which can worsen symptoms. This is due to various factors such as stress, heat and mechanical stress on the tissues.

In saying that, exercise can be of great benefit and should not be avoided based on this premise.

Some of our recommendations include:
• starting slow with small amounts of low intensity exercise
• exercise in cooler environments
•stay hydrated before, during and after exercise
• incorporate relaxation techniques following any kind of exercise to help regulate the autonomic nervous system

We would love to hear some of your ideas!

Unfortunately, when it comes to assessment of mast cell activation syndrome , much more work needs to be done. Some of the issues with current testing include:

• It is known that mast cells can release more than 300 mediators which can affect individuals differently, however, only 10% of these mediators are currently able to be tested.

• The available blood and urine tests require the samples to remain chilled which many laboratories can not facilitate. Due to this, many of the samples show up as false negatives.

• The levels of mediators within the blood and urine fluctuate quickly, hence, it is difficult to time the testing.

• There is also no definitive test to rule out MCAS.

Diagnosis is often based on a combination of factors including symptoms consistent with MCAS, exclusion of other conditions and a positive response to treatment.

We delve into the testing options in much more detail in our upcoming course. For more information, sign up to our newsletter through our website.

Today is World Sleep Day:

We know that long COVID impacts the , in particular to the wake cycle. A delayed sleep wake cycle is characterised by the inability to fall asleep, difficulty waking up on time and in some case daytime sleepiness and/or depression.

An interesting theory suggests that COVID 19 may affect the noradrenaline signalling in the brain disrupting the sleep-wake cycle, typically known as an adrenaline storm. This means that people experience waking suddenly, alert with a pounding heart. It has been suggested that this may be linked to increased levels and some people may benefit from H1 & H2 histamine receptor antagonists in the short term.

The effects of insomnia on health is reported in a study by Hendrickson et al who looked at 594 US healthcare workers and covid 19 infection on insomnia systems. The paper is attached in the comments section.

Findings indicate:

• 45% of healthcare workers had moderate insomnia

• 10% of healthcare workers had a period of severe insomnia

• Insomnia related to suicidality, poorer functioning and thoughts of leaving work

• Personal history of COVID 19 was an independent predictor of insomnia.
