The Red Box Project - Oxford City We provide free menstrual products to local schools and youth groups in Oxford because having your period shouldn't stop you from accessing an education.

14/07/2020

Summer holidays are almost here - but there’s still time for schools and colleges in England to order their free period products & distribute them to students who need them‬.⁣

‪We know COVID-19 has exacerbated problems of access to essential period supplies - it’s vital we take this chance to support young people over ‬the summer period, when schools are closed.⁣

You can find more info about the Government’s scheme on our website, including details of how to place orders from phs Group. ⁣

Please help to share this message, especially with your local schools and colleges. Just as free school meals provision has been extended over the holidays, let’s ensure that free period products are also readily available 🙌❤️⁣

📣📣NEWS FLASH📣📣
From Red Box HQ:

After two and a half years of providing free period products to schools across the country, and following a legal campaign launched with Free Periods, we are delighted to say that the Government has at last taken action to tackle the issue of period poverty experienced by children in England.

The Department for Education has committed to funding the supply of free period products to all schools (primary and secondary) and colleges from early next year, distributed via the phs Group. Detailed guidance on the scheme for schools is expected in early December, with full roll-out in January 2020.

Being an ‘opt-in’ programme, we believe it is critical that all of England’s schools and colleges understand the scheme and are supported through the process, so they can make the most of this opportunity.

We know from our work providing free period products to thousands of educational settings that freely available period supplies have the potential to make a huge difference to young people’s lives: improving attendance and enabling greater participation at school.

This is your chance to support all of your students to engage fully in their education, unencumbered by the normal biological process of menstruation.

If you would like to be kept informed of developments, including when the portal for ordering free products is live, please head over to our website (link below) and fill out our super quick form.

About Us

Period poverty is when someone is unable to access menstrual products and it’s a pressing issue in the UK - especially among young people. Plan UK found that 10% of young people have been unable to afford menstrual products like tampons and pads when they've needed them.

The result of period poverty can be that young people are uncomfortable at school, needing to improvise with socks and rags to get them through their period, or even missing school altogether. Last year, 137,700 young people missed school due to period poverty.

The Red Box Project is a community-based initiative, which aims to support young people throughout their periods by providing red boxes filled with free period products to local schools. The Red Box Project quietly ensures that no young person misses school because they have their period.

Oxford Hub is supporting The Red Box Project by setting up boxes across central Oxford! You can find all the work Oxford Hub does at www.oxfordhub.org or on our page.
