The Minded Institute was recently contacted by Sarah Truman from Wild Child and Co () informing us of a 180 turn around by Australia’s National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) position on the value of yoga for people with disabilities. The NDIA is an independent agency providing funding to people with disabilities through the National Disability Support Scheme (NDSS). Previously the NDSS has covered yoga therapy recognising its capacity to improve the quality of life and overall health for those with disabilities. However, The Minded Institute was notified this is about to change.

Sarah shared her worries directly with us:

“With evidence-based support showing that yoga therapy helps people with disabilities achieve their goals and integrate into the community, the NDIS’s attempt to ban yoga therapy is deeply concerning. Yoga therapy is more than just a practice; it’s a lifeline for many, offering tailored care that empowers individuals to achieve their goals and thrive. We must advocate for continued access to this essential service, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to experience its profound benefits”

According to the AUSactive website “The current draft categorisation of Yoga Therapy in the list of NDIS Supports states it is “not value for money/effective or beneficial”. AUSactive, as part of its commitment to advocating for inclusive health and wellbeing for all abilities, is calling on members and the broader community to have their say on the Australian Department of Social Services’. We recognise we need to keep the pressure on the NDIS and hope this will help to spread the message far and wide to prevent those with disability from losing funding for yoga therapy..

Since our inception, The Minded Institute has advocated for yoga therapy to be offered in affordable ways (and freely) to people in need, as we know how much of a difference it can make in their lives. This change in direction by the NDIA is in stark contradiction to what we know to be true through our own experience and through the hundreds of clinical trials expressing yoga’s vast therapeutic value.

In order to support the yoga therapy community in Australia, we urge you to get in touch with the Australian Department of Social Services to make a case for yoga’s efficacy.

Donna Noble is one of the directors of the Minded Institute. She is conducting a research to understand the barriers to individuals practicing yoga.

Donna is an internationally renowned yoga teacher, author, speaker on body positivity, diversity and inclusion, and has made it her mission to improve diversity and inclusion in the yoga and well-being space.

As a champion for health and well-being for everyone, she is looking to understand the stereotypes/ barriers that might be keeping people from trying yoga via a research survey.

The findings from this research will be pivotal for Donna’s book and most importantly for findings ways to share yoga in the places it may be most needed and least accessible.

If you have 5 minutes, please share your honest thoughts on why you (or someone you know) might hesitate to try yoga. Please also share with your communities, friends and families.

Leave a comment below if you would like to take part in the research, and we will send the link directly to your inbox.

Just over 4 years on from when the first wave of the covid virus swept the world, we are still feeling the repercussions of the pandemic in many ways from physical, to emotional, to economic.

In 2023, it was estimated that at least 65 million people continued to suffer from Long Covid worldwide. Long-Covid can include the continuing unabated experience of symptoms for years, but the threshold for diagnosis is having these symptoms for at least 3 months.

According to a recent report from the United States Census Bureau Household Pulse Survey 1 in 4 people — approximately 27,831,176 Americans — who have had COVID-19 met the criteria for Long-Covid, many are still suffering.

March is International Long Covid Awareness Month, the creators behind this month are calling on global governments, the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United Nations, healthcare, schools, businesses, and individuals to acknowledge Long Covid as an international emergency and a threat to global security.

Throughout the pandemic, founder and CEO of Minded, Heather Mason, offered breathing sessions to those experiencing covid. She made it her mission to support as many people as possible with practices they could use in their own daily life.

At a centre for post-covid care in New York, back in 2021, Doctors found a science backed breathing practice which had a game changing effect on restoring normal breathing patterns in the sickest patients.

Doctors noted that through breath work, patients can consciously control their heart rate. In addition, modulating the nervous system’s fight-or-flight response may help regulate the immune system.

As 'proper breathing' is crucial to circulation in the lymphatic system, often described as the body’s highway for immune cells, this plays a role in eliminating toxins and waste.

If you are experiencing Long Covid, reach out to a yoga therapist in our directory: https://themindedinstitute.com/find-a-yoga-therapist/.

We are here to support all those still struggling with the effects for Long-Covid Awareness Month and beyond.

We also invite you to visit The Minded Institute on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aEgenzU51Y&t=302s to experience Heather's breathing practices in your own time.
