Because addiction is just a way to cope with the pain of childhood trauma. Trauma is not the big event that happened but the impact it holds into our bodies. I love Gabor Mate’s compassion and straightforward questioning. I try to work like that with my adult clients.

Lockdown can trigger an internal lockdown. When teens close their door and struggle to engage with their parents: it is worth checking this is not low mood gone into numbness, isolation and depression. It is worth asking a professional, GP and therapist sooner than later. Sometimes, help supporting parents is enough, sometimes therapy or counselling is needed.

After such a long time, going back to school might be making children and parents anxious. First look into yourself and see if there are anxious feelings. Is it about contamination, separation anxiety, or anything else? Containing those feelings will help contain your child’s anxiety. This doesn’t mean avoiding feeling anxious and perhaps jumping into diversions, but staying with the anxiety. Grounding yourself info the present moment through the senses, breathing in and out helps calming the nervous system.

So many feelings to be explored with the children at the moment. So many opportunities to become more aware of them, to build a sense of who they are. As parents, it's really important to welcome them and stay with them, without trying to change them. It shows our children that it's ok to have feelings and it helps them regulate. 😊😡😳🤭😴🤒🤢

Pay attention to your Body. What is it saying right now? Close your eyes and go inwards. Where is tension right now? What are the sensations? If you notice anxiety, pay attention. It's hiding a core feeling. What is underneath? Is it fear, anger, longing, grief or joy and excitement? Name it, and stay with it for a few minutes. Does it begin to ease? Bear with it a little bit more. When you are are ready, come back and gently open your eyes. Welcome back. You just connected with yourself. Now you can begin 😊🌼❤️
