This is terrible. When choosing an acupuncturist, ALWAYS ask about the level of acupuncture training someone has had.
There is no mandatory standard or length of training in the UK, and it is not regulated.
Some people advertising themselves as acupuncturists have only done a weekend or short training course. That is dry needling, not acupuncture.
The gold standard is degree-level training of over 3000 hours, which is what I have completed. Sadly anyone from other disciplines can undertake short weekend courses. There is a reason it takes three years of full-time study in the theory and practice of acupuncture to be professionally qualified. Our training is extensive - including training in safe practice.
If you see someone whose primary role is not as an acupuncturist, ask them how many hours of training they have done.
Check that they are a member of one of only three organisations in the UK that represent degree-level acupuncturists only: the Association of Acupuncture Clinicians, the Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the British Acupuncture Council.

This can be a very common misconception!

Acupuncture needles are as fine as a strand of hair (unlike needles used for injections/taking blood).

They are not painful - the sensation is often described as a tingling/dull ache. Patients commonly report feeling relaxed or invigorated during and after treatment.

Acupuncture should not be a painful or unpleasant experience.
