This past weekend was the final teaching weekend for PT59 🧑‍🎓 👩‍🎓

The group spent Saturday revising and practising for their final practical assessment on Sunday as well as preparing for life as fully qualified level 5 soft tissue therapists after the course!

Mel Cash left us with some experienced words of wisdom and the group did excellently in their examination.

The McMurray’s Test is used to find out more about the deeper structures of the knee 🦵

Using a combination of knee flexion and tibial rotation we are effectively testing the different aspects of the joint, specifically the meniscus and articular cartilage, for wear & tear and injury or dysfunction.

In the world of soft tissue therapy we love simple ways of remembering things which is why we have acronyms and rhymes to help us remember potentially complex ideas.

Here is one such (unplanned) example…

When we’re learning to identify asymmetries through posture and joint assessment it’s easy to get carried away when we spot something! Always remember that, unless the observed asymmetry is related to complaint the patient presents with, it is just an observation that may or may not become relevant further down the line.

We need to be careful with the words and phrases we use when talking to patients, it’s all too easy to label someone with a ‘syndrome’ or ‘dysfunction’ with the danger being that the patient will identify themselves as such.

This weekend was weekend 2 for the new group and we learned the importance of using the SOAP protocol and the associated ARTS structure to assessment..

Liam demonstrates that it’s easy to be overwhelmed by the amount of information a client may be willing to offer but by sticking to SOAP and ARTS we can retain structure in the assessment process and quickly develop a suitable treatment plan!

A big welcome to our new students starting their Level 5 Professional Diploma in Soft Tissue Therapy last weekend. Here they are on the first morning taking part in a group discussion on what Soft Tissue Therapy actually is and does. Liam was leading the teaching, ably assisted by Claudia.

The next 10 months will be exciting and challenging, but I'm sure our previous graduates would agree that it will be worth all the hard work!

Congratulations go to our latest group of students who completed their BTEC Level 5 Diploma in Soft Tissue Therapy this weekend. Here they are enjoying a well-earned picnic following their final practical assessment on Sunday.

I'm sure they will all enjoy the rewarding opportunities and careers this qualification can give, spending their days helping clients, and enjoying all the positive feedback and many thanks they'll receive in return. Well done for all the hard work!

Liam, Emily and Dean (our senior tutors) tell me they've been a great group to teach and I would like to say a big thank you to them for all their efforts over the past 10 months.

London Marathon NSPCC Soft Tissue Team - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

The NSPCC is looking for therapists to treat their London Marathon runners at the NSPCC post marathon reception

Date: Sunday 27 April 2025
Time: 1100-1830
Location: The Mall Galleries (on The Mall just after the finishing line)

Student & Professional Therapist Package: £30 to help towards travelling paid in cash on the day; NSPCC T-Shirt to wear and keep; food and drink supplied; all equipment provided onsite including massage tables, lotions and paper towels so you can travel nice and light on the day!

This is always a relaxed and sociable environment providing lots of photo opportunities and CPD hours, and this event is open to both students and qualified therapists.
