As a Foot Health Practitioner I’d like to explain why looking after your feet is so important and, how with regular good care, you can prevent a myriad of painful and debilitating conditions which will effect not just your feet, but your general well-being too.

From the moment we start walking our feet carry us literally throughout our entire lives. Bearing the weight of our bodies makes them one of the hardest working parts of our anatomy, even more so when you consider that the average person walks approximately 216 million steps in their lifetime!

Unfortunately, as with many other health-related issues, we often only seek help when we have a problem, so by regularly visiting a Foot Health Practitioner you’ll help to prevent infections and disorders and keep your feet as active for as long as possible.

A visit to a Foot Health Practitioner will include nail cutting, hard skin removal and treatment of conditions such as corns, callouses, in-growing nails, thickened or fungal nails. We’ll also carry out routine assessment and foot care for high risk and diabetic patients and give you lots of helpful advice about caring for your feet in between appointments.

To book your feet in for a comprehensive Foot Health Check visit www.thefoot-works.com or call 07919 096372

Autumn has arrived … that time of year again when we say farewell to sandals and open shoes and our feet go in to “hibernation” in more enclosed shoes and boots.

Some foot problems (such as ingrown toenails and corns) can improve during Summer months, however changing to more enclosed footwear can sometimes cause friction and pressure, which can lead to pain.

Here are some Top Tips for healthy feet in the colder months:

• Remove nail varnish - give your nails a break and nourish with creams and oils
• Choose the right foot wear - check there is good toe box room and you can wiggle your toes. Lace ups and adjustable straps will help hold your foot firmly and boots with zips are a good idea
• Exercise regularly - keep the blood flow pumping. Even if you are less mobile, chair exercises are great – keep moving your ankles and toes
• Avoid getting cold feet and chilblains. Wear natural wool socks
• Skin can become really dry in the colder months, try to use a good foot cream containing urea
• Now’s a good time of year to have a full Foot Health Check and treatment by visiting Sarah Lewzey at Ingledale Therapy.

Back to school for most children also means back to backpacks!
It’s important to remember that carrying heavy backpacks incorrectly can lead to back pain and discomfort, as well as placing significant stress on a child’s developing spine.

Here are a few top tips to ensure your child’s back is protected:

Choose the right backpack: Always choose a backpack with wide, padded straps. Narrow straps can dig into the shoulders and cause discomfort. For added comfort and support look for a backpack with a padded back. A waist strap or hip belt will help distribute the weight more evenly.

Pack light: Encourage your child to only pack what’s necessary for the day ahead and regularly clean out the backpack to remove anything that’s unnecessary. Excessive weight can strain the back.
Weight distribution: Place the heaviest items closest to the child’s back rather than at the bottom of the backpack. Use all the available compartments to spread the load.

Adjust the straps: The bottom of the backpack should sit at waist level. Adjust the straps so the backpack fits snugly against the child’s back. Use both shoulder straps to prevent muscle strain and promote balance.

It’s imperative that your child’s spine remains in good health and I can assist you in identifying any issues from a young age, as well as giving your child guidance to help them maintain proper spinal alignment. It's important to note that chiropractic care is not a cure-all and should not be used as a substitute for medical treatment when necessary. However, it can be a useful complementary therapy for many people looking to improve their wellbeing and quality of life.
