Only 5% of the anaesthetic that is administered during a surgical procedure is metabolised by the patient. The remaining 95% is released into the atmosphere, where it can stay for up to 14 years as a harmful and highly polluting greenhouse gas.

"As the sustainability lead within the anaesthetic department at East Sussex Hospital, I have strived to make changes in our practice that help to improve the carbon footprint of the hospital. We have succeeded in removing desflurane from practice, decommissioned the nitrous oxide manifolds, and now we have installed SageTech Medical’s SID-Dock to capture waste volatile anaesthetic gases for recycling. The development of the Sussex Surgical Centre was a prime opportunity to bring in this new technology that can lead to significant carbon savings."
