✨ Unexpected find in Cardiff this week ✨

We popped into Cardiff Central Library while scouting for clinic rooms and we were genuinely impressed.

They’ve created a neurodivergent-friendly area complete with sensory boxes. It’s calm, welcoming, and thoughtfully designed, ideal for anyone who finds busy spaces overwhelming. It's so encouraging to see public spaces making inclusion a priority. These small touches really matter.

Once we got home to Devon we found out that there has been very valuable funding towards neurodivergent spaces and resources!

🌟 Well done, you have set a brilliant example of what accessible, inclusive community spaces can be. We look forward to spending more time in Cardiff in the near future.

We have received Shared Prosperity Funding and are working with our Hubs and libraries to make them more accessible

Always lovely to receive such a wonderful testimonial

"From the very beginning, the entire process was so well thought out and incredibly reassuring. The staff were absolutely wonderful — kind, patient, and genuinely compassionate. Every step felt carefully considered, not just for formality’s sake, but with real care for the person being assessed.

We were never rushed or made to feel like just another case. Instead, we felt truly seen and heard. The depth of understanding, the sensitivity shown, and the way everything was explained so clearly made a world of difference to both me and my child.

They were endlessly patient, gently guiding us through every stage, always making sure my child was comfortable and supported. It’s rare to find a service that feels this genuine. You can tell it’s not just a job for them — they really care.

We felt safe, valued, and well looked after throughout the entire process. I honestly can’t praise them enough.

If this is the path you are considering I would absolutely recomend you give Autism Assessment UK a call. You will be in the best, most holistic hands. "

Autistic traits may not be noticed until teenage years. This can be for a number of reasons, including that a young person has been able to mask (or hide) their differences up until this point.

➡️ These are just some of the traits that may be noticed in autistic teenagers.

Please note, this is a very brief overview and not an exhaustive list. If you suspect that your child or young person may be autistic, then please contact us via email if you would like a FREE telephone consultation to discuss whether an autism assessment is suitable.

The summer holidays are just around the corner, and many families and children are preparing for a change in routine. Whilst filled with family time and fun, for many autistic children and young people the summer holidays can be a stressful time with lack of routine and new experiences to manage.

➡️ However there are some things that you can do to help lessen the anxiety, and provide some predictability and structure to this time.

In this lead up to the summer holidays, have you thought about using a Social Story to prepare your child for the upcoming change? You could use a Social Story to help explain the change in school days, to days at home. If you are heading out for a day trip, or family holiday, you could use a Social Story to communicate with your child about what is going to happen.

📖 So what is a Social Story? 📖

Social Stories are designed to give short, clear descriptions about an event, activity or social situation. The information is presented in a literal way, and can be adapted based on your child’s preferences. Providing this information in a clear way gives structure and clarity, and therefore can help to reduce anxiety.

Autistic traits can sometimes be noticed in pre-school years, and these are just some of the things that may be noticed.

However, for children with more subtle traits autism may not be recognised until they are older. Keep your eyes peeled for future posts on how to recognise autism in older children and teenagers 👀

Processing every day sensory information can be difficult for some autistic people. Today, we’re looking at taste 😋

Some people may be UNDER-SENSITIVE to taste. This might mean that they like to eat spicy or foods with strong flavours. Some people may eat non-edible items such as dirt.

Being OVER-SENSITIVE to taste might mean that a person prefers to eat more bland foods, and finds food with too much flavour overpowering.

Sensory differences around taste may be part of the reason that a person has a restricted diet. As long as a person is eating a variety of foods from different food groups, this is not always a problem. Every person is different and will need different sensory adjustments based on their individual needs.

However, if you are concerned about a person’s eating habits then please check out this really useful guide from the National Autistic Society to learn more ➡️ https://www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/topics/behaviour/eating/all-audiences

“They’re a naughty child”

❌ Unfortunately, we have heard this many times but this is NOT the case.

Autistic children are more likely to show dysregulated behaviours than other peers of their age. Dysregulated behaviours might include:
➡️ Rejecting a request
➡️ Behaviour that others might interpret as rude
➡️ Being perceived to be verbally or physically aggressive towards others
➡️ Sensory behaviours
➡️ Self-injurious behaviours
…and many more.

We can start to understand some of these behaviours by using the ‘iceberg model’.

As we know, what we see of an iceberg, above the surface, is only a small proportion of the total mass of that iceberg. This means that most of the iceberg lies below the surface of the water and is UNSEEN.

When we take this approach to understanding behaviours, we place them on the portion of the iceberg that lies above the waterline. This is because these are the SEEN aspects of the behaviour. So we include the specific behaviours that we can observe, such as an ‘angry’ outburst, kicking or throwing objects.

Then we look at the portion of the iceberg that is below the surface. This accounts for the underlying difficulties an autistic child may experience. We can then use this information to address the cause of the behaviour rather than the behaviour itself.

We hope you found this information useful. Please let us know if the comments if there are any strategies or tips you’d like to see from us in future posts ⬇️

This is NOT ❌ an accurate representation of the number of autistic women and girls. Many autistic women are diagnosed later in life, missed or misdiagnosed which often leads to mental health difficulties.

The experience of autistic women and girls is starting to be more understood, however there continues to be many barriers to assessment and diagnosis for girls due to outdated stereotypes of autism.

Autistic traits in women and girls may differ from the traditional profile of autism. For example:
➡️ Autistic girls may appear to have fewer social difficulties. However, they are more likely to ‘mask’ their autistic traits (which is overwhelming and exhausting).
➡️ They may succeed academically and have a good friendship group in school, therefore teachers are less likely to notice differences.
➡️ Repetitive behaviours are stereotypically understood as rocking, or flapping hands. Repetitive behaviours for autistic women might be twirling their hair or tapping their nails on the table.
➡️ Focussed interests might stereotypically be thought of as an interest in trains. For autistic girls, their interests might be considered ‘typical’ of their age. For example, an interest in make-up or a musician.

It is so important that autistic women and girls are supported to access diagnosis so that they can understand themselves, and access better support.

At Autism Assessment UK, we understand the barriers that women and girls may face when trying to access diagnostic pathways. That’s why we are passionate about ensuring autistic women and girls are given the opportunity to access diagnostic assessment with a highly specialist team of clinicians.

If you think that you, or someone you love, may be autistic, please contact us via telephone or email if you would like a free telephone consultation to discuss our autism assessments.
