One month loving you.. our little boy Max was born on the 29th February. A Pisces and Year of the Wood Dragon, he’s a special little soul who’s hobbies so far include refusing to sleep unless being cuddled, splashing in the bath, listening to the ocean and bird song and guzzling milk. Motherhood is a massive revelation for me, exhausting yes but nothing could prepare me for the fierce love and protection I would feel for him. Welcome to the world little one ❤️.

If you struggle to digest grains, one of the best things you can do to give your gut a helping hand is soaking 🌱

Soaking helps to remove phytic acid and enzyme inhibitors, making the grains more digestible and the nutrients easier to assimilate.

Soaking your grains is super easy, just follow this formula:

Bowl of grains + 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar + enough warm water to cover the grains

Leave the grains to soak overnight, rinse them off in the morning and voila! You can then cook as normal (although your cooking time will generally be shorter if you've pre-soaked your grains).

Have you experiemented with soaking your grains?

Did you know there's a big difference between meat stock and bone broth? 🥣

For those who can't tolerate bone broth, meat stock is an excellent alternative.

Bone broth contains histamine and glutamate, both of which can aggravate people who are sensitive (eg by worsening histamine syptoms, or increasing anxiety/agitation).

Meat stock contains much lower levels of both of these things and is generally very well tolerated, and contains all the wonderful gut healing nutrients that give bone broth it's shining reputation.

So how to differentiate between meat stock vs bone broth?

Meat stock uses a whole piece of meat with bones (eg a whole chicken, with the meat still on the bones) and is cooked for 2-3 hours. Bone broth uses just the bones, and is cooked for anywhere from 12 - 48 hours.

Try my super simple chicken meat stock recipe to help soothe and heal your gut.

If you’ve been struggling with stubborn gut issues, thiamine (B1) deficiency may be playing a huge role 💫

Why is thiamine so important for gut health?

Thiamine is crucial for stomach acid production, and without enough stomach acid food can sit and ferment in the gut.

With increased fermentation comes ALL of the fun things such as gas, bloating, burping, reflux, tummy pain and bowel movement changes. Stomach acid is also key for preventing bacterial overgrowth and SIBO and for proper digestion and absorption of nutrients.

Thiamine is crucial for motility in the stomach and small intestine. Poor gut motility is one of the biggest risk factors for SIBO, which is a culprit behind so many of the most bothersome gut symptoms.

To replenish your thiamine status, try upping your intake of thiamine rich foods, and consider using a thiamine supplement, in particular in the form of allithiamine, a fat soluble form of thiamine which is showing particular promise with helping to resolve chronic gut issues.

Have you considered thiamine for your gut issues?

There is so much more to acid reflux than high stomach acid!

If you have been told to go on acid lowering drugs long term with no other investigation, you have been given poor advice.

Drug companies will insist that stomach acid is not important and lowering it with medication doesn’t cause problems. These drugs fail to address the root cause and can be seriously problematic if taken long term, leading to an increased risk for nutrient deficiencies, osteoporosis, gut infections and dementia.

When I work with someone with acid reflux, I make sure we dig into each of the possibilities listed above, to truly get to the bottom of the issue. No covering up symptoms with proton pump inhibitors or miserable restrictive diets.

Do you have acid reflux? What has helped and what has not? Tell me below!

Whilst it is possible to thrive and feel good on a plant based diet, there are some very important pitfalls to avoid 🌱

Gut healing especially can be a big challenge.

I have observed clinically that people who are willing to include some animal foods in their diet usually resolve their gut issues more quickly.

If you are plant based these are the most useful to things to focus on:

- Soak EVERYTHING! Nuts, seeds, grains and beans. Removes some of the phytic acid and makes it gentler on the stomach
- Make sure you have some form of protein with every meal and snack
- Eat fresh food using wholefood ingredients. Avoid processed/convenience plant based products (e.g. soy burgers, fake meats, ready meals, cakes, ice cream etc)
- Consider supplementing with B12, omega 3 and vitamin D and get a comprehensive blood test at least once a year to check for deficiencies

What have your experiences been with eating plant based? I’d love to hear.

Your liver is a KEY part of your digestive system ✨

It has many important functions, including:

- Bile production - bile is needed to break down fats and prevent pathogen overgrowth in the small intestine
- Detoxification of harmful substances such as environmental toxins, drugs and alcohol
- Storage of glycogen and fat soluble vitamins A,D,E and K
- Regulation of s*x hormones, thyroid hormones and adrenal hormones
- Production of immune factors

What are three simple things you can do to support your liver?

1. Eat foods with a bitter quality regularly, such as broccoli, dandelion, rocket, chicory, artichoke, ginger and green tea
2. Minimise exposure to things that harm the liver including alcohol, pesticides and refined sugar
3. Prioritise 8 hours of sleep a night

In short, YES, but why? 🤔

At this time of year a predictable thing happens on social media/online, one camp attacks the word ‘detox’ and anything to do with detox including detox diets, detox products etc. The other camp touts the benefits of detox and waxes lyrical on all the great things you can do to support detoxification.

I can safely say i’m in the second camp :). Come join us we’re a friendly bunch!

Although our bodies have incredibly sophisticated systems in place to ensure detoxification is taken care of (liver, kidneys, sweat etc), these systems were designed to deal with a very different world compared to the one we live in today.

Our water, air, food, cleaning products and cosmetics are all loaded with substances that burden the liver. Going on a detox is not replacing your body’s own ability to detox, it is simply lending a helping hand to enhance it 🌱

Whilst it’s true that there are lots of companies jumping on the detox bandwagon, selling dubious (and expensive products) that do little to nothing, a well put together detox can be a profound experience and a great reset or jump off point for making positive changes in your life.

Have you ever tried any kind of detox? I’d love to hear your experiences.

As crazy as it sounds, auto-brewery syndrome is actually a thing 🤯

In auto brewery syndrome, your body makes — “brews” — alcohol (ethanol) out of the carbohydrates you eat. This happens inside your intestines. It is usually caused by having too much yeast (a type of fungus) in your gut.

Your body can tolerate a small amount of alcohol, it has carefully orchestrated mechanisms and detoxification pathways to get rid of it, but when you have too much yeast in your body and it starts pumping out tonnes of alcohol, your body can struggle to cope, and symptoms start to appear.

Here are some signs that you may be producing too much alcohol as a result of excess yeast in your body:

- Feeling drunk or hungover without actually drinking
- Sugar/carbohydrate cravings
- Fatigue
- Brain fog
- Dizziness
- Loss of coordination
- Gut issues
- Low mood/anxiety
- Sinusitis

High stress, a high sugar/refined carbohydrate diet and antibiotics use can all contribute to excess yeast levels in the body.

The good news is that excess yeast can be brought back into balance very effectively using natural tools, such as diet, probiotics (especially saccharomyces boulardii, which is a yeast but a probiotic yeast, which can help to crowd out harmful yeast), immune supporting strategies and antifungal herbs.

The gut microbiome is a hot topic, but what about your poor ol' va**na? That has a microbiome too! 🦠

Just like your gut, there is an amazing ecosystem of bacteria that call your va**na home. If these guys get out of balance, it can cause many different problems, including thrush, bacterial vaginosis, urinary tract infections, fertility issues and more.

The va**nal microbiome is dominated by lactobacillus bacteria, and most women are dominant in one of the four strains of lactobacillus - crispatus, iners, jensenii or gasseri (crispatus is particularly favourable).

Now here’s the interesting bit.. What do lactobacilli love to eat? LACTULOSE! Lactulose is usually taken orally as a laxative, but when small amounts are applied intrava**nally it acts as a wonderful prebiotic! The prebiotic properties of lactulose mean the beneficial bacteria in your va**na can thrive and help to maintain a healthy environment. Pretty amazing, right?

I look forward to the day that this is a more widely recommended treatment. Just like we can’t rely on antibiotics for gut issues, we can’t rely on antibiotics, antifungal pessaries etc as our only options for addressing va**nal dysbiosis.

Let’s start to nurture the va**nal microbiome, not wage war on it.

Have you heard of seed cycling? 🌱

Seed cycling is a fantastic tool to help balance your hormones naturally. I have used this technique many times with clients and seen great results.

Of course there is no one ‘magic bullet’ when it comes to hormones, but a combination of hormone balancing dietary tools, healthy lifestyle changes, and supportive supplementation can help to make a BIG difference to regulating your menstrual cycle and reducing symptoms.

It can be very rewarding to see your symptoms decrease, and to no longer have to dread each period, all using natural strategies.

HOW TO DO SEED CYCLING:

Days 1 to 14 (the follicular phase), take a daily dose of 2 tbsp of ground flaxseeds and pumpkin seeds, plus a high quality fish oil supplement. This supports oestrogen production.
Days 15 to 28 or when your period starts (the luteal phase), take a daily dose of 2 tbsp ground sesame seeds and sunflower seeds, plus a high quality evening primrose oil supplement. This supports progesterone production.

TIP - make a batch of seed blend at the beginning of each week and keep in the fridge in the glass jar so it stays fresh. The seed blend can be added to smoothies, sprinkled over porridge, salad, soups or yoghurt and fruit.

Have you tried seed cycling, if so how did you get on with it?
