The new HorseHage Forage Extender is not just great for helping you stretch out your forage supply and provide your horse with quality fibre, it is also a fantastic way to build enrichment into their daily routine ๐
Here are a few simple ways to use your forage extender as an enrichment activity:
๐ Add fruit and vegetables
Small amounts can add flavour variety and make feeding time more engaging.
๐ณ Natural additions
Mix in small amounts of correctly identified cow parsley or fresh willow to add texture and natural browsing interest.
โจ Topper for hay or haylage
Sprinkle over existing forage to add interest, particularly for horses that can become selective or bored.
๐ง Sloppy forage
Mix with water to create a softer option, which can help support hydration in warmer or colder weather.
๐ธ Shaker nets
Use in the stable or turnout area to help prolong feeding time and reduce boredom.
Sometimes enrichment is not about adding more, but about feeding smarter.
As always, introduce gradually and ensure any plants are correctly identified and free from contamination.

Keeping track of your horseโs weight is a simple and important part of good horsemanship. It helps you monitor condition, adjust feeding, and support overall health.
A weight tape gives you a useful guide when used consistently and correctly. We have a few tips to ensure you can use a weigh tape as efficiently and correctly as possible;
โ Stand your horse on level ground
โ Make sure they are relaxed and standing square
โ Place the tape around the girth area, just behind the withers
โ Pull the tape snug, but not tight
โ Take the reading at the same point each time
For the most reliable tracking, measure in the same position and at a similar time of day. Small changes over time are far more meaningful than a single reading.
A balanced diet with adequate fibre is key to maintaining a healthy body condition, while also supporting efficient digestion, energy levels, and overall wellbeing.
Consistency is everything. Focus on trends, not just numbers.
If you need more help or have feeding questions, the team at the HorseHage and Mollichaff helpline is always happy to help:

The high-fibre, low starch and sugar range from HorseHage and Mollichaff can all be identified with the Hoof Kind logo which denotes they are all suitable for horses that are prone to Laminitis, depending on where they are in their journey to recovery.
One advantage of Mollichaff Partial Forage Replacers is just how versatile they are when it comes to enrichment ๐
Beyond supporting fibre intake, theyโre a brilliant way to encourage natural behaviour, movement and mental stimulation.
Here are five simple ways to use them as enrichments:
๐ Search the buckets
Place small buckets around the turnout area to encourage movement and natural foraging.
๐ฟ Multiple forage piles
Create several smaller piles instead of one large one to mimic more natural grazing patterns.
๐งฉ Snuffle mats
Encourage slower, more engaging feeding and add mental stimulation to the routine.
โฝ Forage ball mix
Combine Mollichaff Partial Forage Replacer with traditional forage inside a forage ball for an interactive feeding experience.
๐ฑ Scatter feeding
Lightly scatter small handfuls across a clean area to promote gentle movement and natural foraging behaviour.
Enrichment does not have to be complicated. Sometimes small changes to how we feed can make a big difference to daily wellbeing.
As always, introduce gradually and ensure any additions are safe and suitable.

The company was established over 40 years ago when the late Mark Westaway (Snr) became increasingly concerned about his event horses persistently coughing. His veterinary surgeon expressed the view that the coughing was dust-related and that since hay was the major dust source, the problem would continue unless someone could come up with a dust-free forage designed specifically for the horse. So the challenge was set and from that chance but significant remark, the idea for HorseHage was born.
The company, Mark Westaway and Son, which has developed the HorseHage brand into a global name, is now headed by Markโs son, (also named Mark) and his brother-in-law, Chris Tar.
Mark comes from a farming background and the Westaway family has been based at Love Lane Farm in Marldon, Devon since 1952. This is now also the Head Office of the HorseHage operation, and one of three regional licensed producers in the UK โ the other two being Friendship Estates in South Yorkshire and Fox Feeds in Hertfordshire. There are also HorseHage producers in Germany, Sweden and New Zealand.
Mark Westaway & Son was awarded the Royal Warrant in 1983 after Her Majesty the Queenโs horse, Burmese, was fed HorseHage when suffering from a respiratory problem. She was just one of tens of thousands of horses and ponies, from Shetlands to Thoroughbreds that have benefited from HorseHageโs dust-free properties.
HorseHage is the Official Forage Supplier to the British equestrian teams at the World Equestrian Games for 2018 and HorseHage has been supplied to the British equestrian teams at every Olympic Games from Los Angeles in 1984 through to the present day.
