🥕 When to Use Chaff at Competitions

Top tips

✅ Before travel and exercise - A double handful before travel or exercise will help support a healthy digestive system

✅ As part of a bucket feed - Adding chaff to a bucket feed will help to increase your horse’s fibre intake and increase chewing time.

✅ Added fibre between classes - Mollichaff has some partial forage replacers that can be a great source of fibre for between classes.

✅ After competing: Sloppy fibre-based feed with added electrolytes is a great way to rehydrate, increase fibre intake and replace essential salts that have been lost.

⚠️ Remember: Stick to familiar feeds — don’t introduce new chaff or feeds on the day of competition.

All horses should be fed as an individual, in accordance with body condition, workload, size, temperament, management, environment and access to grazing.

✅Fibre is essential for the main energy source and healthy digestive system..

🧊 Help Your Horse Stay Cool and Hydrated in the Heat! 🌞🐴

In hot weather, horses naturally drink more water — a 500kg horse may need 40 -60 litres a day (that’s 4–6 buckets!) 💧. Exercise in the heat increases this even further.

A lack of water can increase the risk of dehydration and colic. Water is vital for many bodily functions, including transporting nutrients, aiding digestion, regulating temperature, eliminating waste.

💡 Top tips
✅ Ice bricks with chopped apples and carrots
✅ Flavoured water - add unsweetened apple juice
✅ Sloppy chaff feed with added electrolytes
✅ Provide shade or bring your horse in at the hottest part of the day
✅ Cool shower - no need to use a sweat scrapper
✅ Exercise early or late in day when the temperature is cooler
✅ Lastly, and an absolute must. Fresh clean water at all times.

These simple tips can make a big difference in keeping your horse cool, hydrated, and healthy.

How HorseHage Began

The company was established over 40 years ago when the late Mark Westaway (Snr) became increasingly concerned about his event horses persistently coughing. His veterinary surgeon expressed the view that the coughing was dust-related and that since hay was the major dust source, the problem would continue unless someone could come up with a dust-free forage designed specifically for the horse. So the challenge was set and from that chance but significant remark, the idea for HorseHage was born.

The company, Mark Westaway and Son, which has developed the HorseHage brand into a global name, is now headed by Mark’s son, (also named Mark) and his brother-in-law, Chris Tar.

Mark comes from a farming background and the Westaway family has been based at Love Lane Farm in Marldon, Devon since 1952. This is now also the Head Office of the HorseHage operation, and one of three regional licensed producers in the UK – the other two being Friendship Estates in South Yorkshire and Fox Feeds in Hertfordshire. There are also HorseHage producers in Germany, Sweden and New Zealand.
