Jasmyn House Technology Team

Jasmyn House Technology Team We aim to empower the blind people of South Devon To lead more independent lives by providing free advice and training on a range of assistive technology.

Jasmyn House Technology Team. Who are we? The Jasmyn House Technology Team is a small community group of visually impaired volunteers. We aim to help the visually impaired people of South Devon and Torbay to enhance their lives and promote independence through the use of assistive technology by providing free practical advice and training on a range of assistive and access technology. What do we provide? We specialise in providing one to one or small group training on Iphone and Ipads using their built in accessibility features. These are; Voiceover, which is a screen reader that allows a blind person to use the touch screen and Zoom which magnifies the screen content so that a partially sighted person can see it. Our Iphones and Ipads have apps installed on them that are specifically designed for the blind and partially sighted, for example, an object recognition app called TapTapSee, an OCR app which scans any text and then speaks it called Knfb Reader, Be My Eyes which is an app that links a blind person to a sighted volunteer via the Iphones video camera, a navigation app called BlindSquare and many more. We also provide basic computer training. Our training pc’s have most of the more commonly used screen reader and magnification software installed on them, these include, Guide, SuperNova Access Suite, JAWS and NVDA. We can demonstrate various types of assistive technology equipment, for example, an electronic magnifier, speaking colour recogniser and digital labeller and a reading machine that can scan and read a document aloud. Beginner Braille lessons can also be arranged on request. You can book a fun informal taster session so that you can have some hands on experience with the equipment or software that you are interested in. Then if you feel you would like some training you can book in for some free training sessions. We are open from 10.00am to 4.00pm Tuesday to Friday. Where are we? We are based in the Technology room in Jasmyn House, 1 Midvale Road, Paignton, TQ4 5BD. If you are travelling by bus from the south hams direction we are directly opposite the Midvale Road bus stop. If you are travelling from anywhere else we are a 5 minute walk from Paignton bus and train station. Please contact us if you need any further information or to make an appointment;

Support us;
If you feel you would like to support what we do you can make a donation on our Go Fund Me page http://www.gofundme.com/rvqy6g or send it to Jasmyn House Technology Team at the above address. We would also be very grateful for donations of any unwanted Iphones, Ipads or Ipods, so that our visually impaired clients could borrow them from us to practice with at home. They do not need to be in perfect working order as long as the touch screen and speakers still work. We would like to make it clear that The Jasmyn House Technology Team is a community group with a Governing constitution. Our volunteers donate their time completely free of charge but we do need to raise funds to cover the running costs of our room and to purchase equipment.
