DEPRESSION & WEIGHT GAIN - It's not as easy as quitting! Unlike smoking, you can’t just quit eating. Depression is often linked to weight gain or can occur as a result of putting on additional kilos after a physical injury, family tragedy or over eating.

Here are some tips to dealing with depression and weightloss

1. Take it slow - People with depression often feel overwhelmed with life, so having small, incremental weight-management goals is important. Find a new way to look at food — as a source of nutrition instead of an outlet for depression and to deal with unwanted feelings.

2. Turn the TV off and get moving - Most people with depression and weight gain have reduced their amount of physical activity. It may not be obvious, but reducing the amount of hours you sit in front of the TV each night can help your waste line. Every bit of physical activity helps; start an exercise regimen to boost yourself out of a rut. Add a walk around the block. If you make small incremental changes, over time you’ll feel more in control, have a more positive outlook, and become more motivated to exercise.”

3. Check with your Doctor before you start any weight loss journey but especially if you are prone to depression. Check with your Doctor that your medications will not interfering with your weight-management efforts and always advise your Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant of what you are taking or currently prescribed.

4. All challenges can be overcome. Just because you feel sad, tired or lonely now does not mean you are clinically depressed. Seek a doctors advice if you think you have more of an ongoing issue and get the help you need.

5. Weight management changes can be challenging for all of us, especially for people with depression, but stay focused and continue to communicate with the people who love you, your doctor and your Consultant to help you find your healthy self ❤️

"I gained 2 pounds overnight, what's going on?"
I often get asked this by clients, and the first thing I tell them is "Don't panic, it's not fat!"
How do I know this? Well, in order to gain 1 pound of extra fat you need to consume 3,500 calories MORE than your recommended daily allowance (which is 2,000 for a woman and 2,500 for a man). So, to gain 2 pounds of fat overnight a woman would need to have eaten 9,000 calories in one day! Pretty difficult, hey?
So, if it's not fat, what caused that gain? Here are 7 possible reasons:
1. You ate salty food yesterday. Sodium causes the body to hold on to water, causing temporary weight gain. Keep drinking plenty of water and it will be gone in a few hours.
2. You ate too many carbs. Your body will have replenished its glycogen stores. For every gram of glycogen the body stores, it also stores 3 grams of water! Go back on plan and that glycogen and water will soon be gone.
3. You weighed in earlier than usual, so there's probably still some food left in your stomach.
4. You ate later than usual last night. See number 3.
5. You need to "go". This weight plays a huge role in body weight fluctuations. It's temporary and will sort itself out soon enough!
6. You had a tough workout yesterday. This can cause temporary water retention and will pass when you drink your 2.25l of water.
7. Ladies, it's coming up to your time of month. Our bodies are often really mean to us around this time and retain water.
So stop panicking! Unless you ate 9,000 calories yesterday, I can safely say you have nothing to worry about!
