Top 3 mistakes beginners make when learning to squat!

❌Too heavy too soon
❌No bracing, causing chest to fall forwards
❌No stability in feet causing you to fall forward onto your toes

✅Start light and build gradually (prioritising posture and form!)
✅ Think about sipping air to inflate your belly, then tense
✅Balanced feet, focus on keeping your weight distributed between your heels, big toe and wee toe 👌

When Ann started, she was nervous about stepping into the gym. Now she walks in like she owns it. That’s what confidence looks like 💥

One of her goals was to strengthen her hips and low back after having some troubles and just last night she added dumbbells to her step up FOR THE FIRST TIME!!

If you've ever felt any type of chronic pain, you'll know the relief of finally seeing progress so this was a huge win 💪

Something I am incredibly passionate about is helping everyday people build strength and confidence! (in case you didn't know 😂)

That's why I started the Weightlifting Club - to create a low barrier option for people to get into the gym and make progress 💪

And also why I have chosen the following topic for my Masters Dissertation:

"Aerobic Training vs Resistance Exercise in Public Health Messaging" 🤓

Whilst we are doing amazing to help around 150 people every week get active... The real goal in the next few years is 1,000 Active.

That starts by thinking big, creating a strong, like-minded community and setting the tone as the leader of the organisation 💪

We are readying up to pilot our first ever Weightlifting Academy programme in January 2026!

What is the Weightlifting Academy?

A targeted weightlifting programme for young people aged 13-17 to build their strength, improve their health, fitness and wellbeing in a safe supportive environment & develop key life skills such as confidence, resilience, discipline and leadership.

How will it run?

We will be delivering it similar to our current weightlifting programme in 12 weekly blocks, with a boys only and girls only class to break down all barriers to participation (we know teenagers can be awkward, so our goal is to make each session feel as inclusive and barrier free as possible!). Alongside their small group coaching, each block will follow themes such as confidence, with young people rooted to reflect on their own journey and be empowered to improve each session. All delivered in our private gym in Paisley 💪

Our mission is not only to help more people engage positively with exercise, but we want to empower young people to make positive steps on their health and fitness and be in control of managing it long term through our revolutionary approach to small group coaching 💪

We are looking to gauge interest at this point with our pilot programme launching in January 2026.

Today is a massive shout-out to all our amazing Sport Ambassadors delivering our FREE sports clubs throughout Renfrewshire 🥳🥳

Second year running out programme and with over 100 kids signed up it's all about helping youngsters have a safe environment to play with their pals, try new sports and have some fun 👌

Without our sport ambassadors we wouldn't be able to do this, so thank you for making these sessions everything they are 🌟

All About Get Active Coaching CIC

Get Active Coaching was established in October 2019 as a sport and exercise business with one simple mission: help get more children and adults active through sport and physical activity. It was set up by me! My name is Martin, and I started this business as I love all things sport and exercise. I wanted to find a way that I could use my passion, experience and knowledge to benefit others.

I have been involved in sport all my life and reached a high level in my younger days in both rugby and football. I have been a Rugby Developmment Officer for Scottish Rugby, which is where I gained a huge amount about how to implement sport and exercise in the community. Except this time, its not just for rugby, it is for every sport you can think of. Since my time as a Rugby Development Officer, I have completed my BSC (Hons) in Sport, Fitness and Coaching, achieved numerous sport coaching qualifications, which has given me the foundation to start and build Get Active Coaching!

Now, back to business. Get Active Coaching has recently achieved a huge milestone: We are now a Community Interest Company! I have spent the last 6 months creating partnerships with local organisations to develop working relationships, business parnerships and even assemble a small coaching workforce to help me with my delivery. I can now begin to make a bigger impact in the community through sport and exercise and help people live a healthier lifestyle as a result.
