🧠 9 Simple Ways to Make Your Home Dementia-Friendly 🏠
Supporting a loved one with dementia? Small changes at home can make a big difference:
1️⃣ Clear Signage – Use clear, easy-to-read labels on doors (like “Toilet” or “Kitchen”). Pictures help too!
2️⃣ Declutter Spaces – Keep surfaces and floors free from clutter to reduce confusion and fall risks.
3️⃣ Contrasting Colours – Help key items stand out (e.g. a red toilet seat or dark placemat under a white plate).
4️⃣ Avoid Mirrors – Reflections can be confusing or distressing for some people with dementia.
5️⃣ Night Lighting – Use soft night lights in bedrooms, hallways and bathrooms to support safe movement at night.
6️⃣ Grab Rails & Non-Slip Mats – Increase confidence and safety in the bathroom.
7️⃣ Calming Décor – Stick to plain, neutral colours. Busy patterns can be overstimulating.
8️⃣ Familiar Layouts – Keep furniture in its usual place to reduce disorientation.
9️⃣ Memory Cues – Use photo boards, familiar objects, and daily routines to support memory and orientation.
These small adjustments help promote independence, safety & peace of mind.
