How’s your toe mobility?

Most health and fitness professionals overlook the importance of proper foot and toe function. Yet, these areas—hidden away in our shoes—play a crucial role in our overall movement and well-being.

Think about it: our feet are as intricate and vital as our hands, yet we often confine them to rigid, sensory-deprived environments—similar to wearing mittens on our hands all day. Is it any wonder then that foot dysfunction is so common?

Take the big toe, for instance. It’s the driver of our foot’s mechanics, yet it often doesn’t receive the extension stress it needs due to our footwear choices. This can contribute to issues like plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, and anterior hip pain.

If you are experiencing these problems, consider the role of the big toe in their condition. Let’s take a step toward healthier, happier feet!

The illustration simply highlights the ideal range of motion, although the range of motion in the top, is hard to reach, it should be a good guideline and something we ALL had from childhood 😊

45° and above is an ideal range of motion in our toes, anything under this should have daily mobility drills applied to improve range of motion.

Have a good week ahead ☺️

💧 Hidden Impact of Dehydration on Foot Health 💧

As a Foot Health Practitioner, I often see how something as simple as not drinking enough water can really affect our feet — especially in older adults.

👣 How dehydration affects feet:

• Dry, fragile skin that cracks more easily
• Increased risk of splits in heels
• Slower healing of cuts or blisters
• Poor circulation
• Higher risk of infection

As we age, our sense of thirst reduces — meaning many elderly relatives and friends simply don’t realise they’re dehydrated.

💙 How you can help someone stay hydrated:

✔️ Offer small drinks regularly rather than large glasses
✔️ Keep a filled water bottle within reach
✔️ Include hydrating foods (melon, cucumber, soups)
✔️ Set gentle reminders
✔️ Make it social — “Let’s have a cuppa together”

Healthy hydration = healthier skin, better healing, and happier feet 👣

If you’re concerned about dry, cracked heels or slow healing skin on your own feet or a loved one’s, I’m always happy to help.

📚✨ Investing in Ongoing Training ✨📚

As a Foot Health Practitioner, keeping my knowledge up to date is so important to me. I’m currently studying a First Aid course as part of my Higher Diploma, alongside continuing CPD training.

First Aid training ensures I’m fully prepared to act quickly and confidently in an emergency, giving my patients extra reassurance during their treatment. Ongoing CPD means I stay current with best practice, safety standards and the latest knowledge in foot health care.

Your safety, wellbeing and confidence in my care will always be my priority. ⛑️🏥💚

👟 Why Good Fitting Footwear Matters 👟

Wearing the right shoes isn’t just about comfort… it’s about protecting your feet and preventing long-term problems.

Poorly fitting footwear can lead to:

❌ Corns & callus
❌ Ingrown toenails
❌ Blisters
❌ Bunions
❌ Hammer toes
❌ Heel pain
❌ Worsening diabetic foot problems

Your shoes should:

✔️ Have enough room in the toe box (no squashing!)
✔️ Support your arch
✔️ Hold your heel securely
✔️ Fasten properly (laces/straps are better than slip-ons)
✔️ Feel comfortable from the moment you try them on

Remember – tight shoes don’t “stretch to fit” safely, and slipping heels can cause friction and instability.

As a Home Visit Foot Health Practitioner, I regularly see foot pain that could have been prevented with better footwear choices. If you’re unsure whether your shoes are right for you – especially if you have diabetes or circulation issues – I’m always happy to advise during your appointment.

Checking your skin regularly could save your life.

The importance of checking for melanoma – including your feet 🦶

Melanoma is a serious type of skin cancer that can develop from an existing mole or appear as a new mark on the skin. When caught early, treatment is often very successful — which is why regular skin checks are so important.

Many people forget to check their feet, but melanoma can develop:

• On the soles of the feet
• Between the toes
• Around the heels
• Under or around the toenails
• On the tops of the feet and ankles

Because we don’t always look at the bottoms of our feet, changes can that can go unnoticed 👣

When caring for your feet, take a moment to check the skin on your soles, heels and between your toes. If you struggle to see the bottoms of your feet, use a mirror or ask someone you trust to help.

If you notice any unusual or changing lesions, always contact your GP promptly. It’s better to get it checked and have reassurance.

Early detection saves lives — and that includes your feet 💚

You've tried every foot cream on the shelf, but your heels are still rough, cracked, or dry by lunchtime. Sound familiar?

Here's the truth: not all dryness is the same, and NOT ALL CREAMS are built to fix it.
If your feet are dealing with deep cracks, stubborn calluses, or dryness that just won't quit, a standard moisturiser isn't going to get you there. 👇🏼
