Some pretty snowberries at Traquair House where we went to check out the Xmas fair. โœจ๏ธ

I've never used these personally as a herbal remedy as they are generally considered toxic, but a bit of research has revealed that due to their high saponin content they can be quite effective externally as a natural anti microbial skin and hair wash.

They have a history of use in traditional Native American medicinal practice as a disinfectant anti parasitic for skin complaints, itches, sores and rashes, as well as to purify eye infections as a wash, and as a purgative for fevers and stomach bugs.

I would not advise experimenting for internal use, unless advised by a qualified practitioner, and personally prefer to opt for gentler more commonly used remedies for these conditions, but love discovering new medicinal plant properties. ๐Ÿ’—๐ŸŒฟ

Anyone else notice how BIG & BRIGHT the moon has been this week, and indeed the past 4 months?

That's because we've just had the 4th in a series of SUPERMOONS - which happens when the moon is at its closest in its orbit of earth.

I don't know about you, but I am strongly affected by Full Moon energy and the past few months have felt intense!

Do you have a remedy you love when emotions are running high? My go-to herb to nurture me through emotional wobbles is always Rose.

Not just because it was the most used herb by herbalists in periods of grief, which was an outcome of my BSc Herbal Medicine dissertation on Natural Remedies for Anticipatory Grief, but because I simply love it. I mean who doesn't?

I add a good pinch to my pot of tea when I need some heart holding support. This one pictured happens to be nettles.

Do you use rose as a remedy? What's your favourite way to work with it?

Sunday blessings! ๐ŸŒป Do you take time off at the weekend?

I'm quite intentional about putting work to one side and enjoying time to pause, tend my home, creativity and self care, catch up with loved ones, go for walks and take a bit of a breather at the weekends.

But it wasn't always this way!

There was a time when I was part-time employed while I was still studying for my Herbal Medicine degree and I'd work any hours available. I'd work evenings, weekends, volunteer to do my colleagues' holiday cover, and pack in the hours. However, I'd frequently get burnt out and feel resentful.

Eventually, I started to create boundaries by reclaiming my evenings, and only available to work for day time shifts.

Then I chose not to work at all on a Sunday.

Then I would not do Saturdays, unless it was for my own practice.

Then I chose not to work on Saturdays at all.

I have amended that slightly now, so I do still work with some clients on a Saturday morning, but compensate with a more relaxed Monday or Friday.

It changes according to the season or country I'm in, but lately, I have been treating myself to a therapy session one afternoon every 2 weeks, and Friday mornings have been for creative "me-time" participating in a Sacred Geometry art class at a local village hall, to enjoy some non work-related fun and friendly connections with some local women.

It can feel hard as I LOVE my work. It often feels like play to me, but creating some boundaries over my time off, like not working at all after 6pm and on Sundays, helps to ensure that I am also nourished by time off to rest and play (the non-work kind!).

How about you?

I'd love to hear in the comments, or let us know over in my brand new community "Dive into the Unknown" for intuitive wild hearted souls which is currently open at a special rate for founding members! ๐Ÿ’œโœจ

I had a gorgeous Lotus Blossom signature treatment from Debby Green recently, although I would describe it more of a healing ceremony or journey than just a "treatment".

I wanted to share a few words about what a powerful transformative experience I had and how healing and nurturing the whole experience was.

Debby warmly welcomes you for your healing experience with herbal tea into a beautiful hut under the beech trees. It felt incredibly special as she shared that she had helped to deliver her own grandson in that very place, so it already felt like an amazing portal just stepping in to it. The room had been well heated with a log fire and scented with sacred herb bundles.

I was made cosy under layers of blankets and pillows which peeled off one by one as the session continued. With rich layers of sound and massage, calling in of your healing guides, it truly felt like a divine and unique personal healing ceremony, blending Debby's years of experience as a doula, midwife and holistic therapist learning techniques from all over the world.

I felt so lovingly held and thoroughly cared for from start to finish, so blissfully relaxed and anointed with fragrant natural oils from head to toe.

If you are in the Scottish Borders or planning a visit, I would highly recommend you treating your mind, body and soul to this deeply nourishing multi-sensory healing journey with Debby.

Wishing .edmiston herbal storyteller of a happy book birthday of her wonderful Time Traveller's Herbal ๐Ÿ’œ๐ŸŒฟโ˜•๏ธ

Was great to see Amanda and get my book signed at a recent Waterstone's bookshop talk.

I had a digital version of the book which is equally beautiful, but leapt at the chance to get my signed copy from Amanda herself.

I already knew of Amanda's fabulous herbal story telling abilities from attending a few of her captivating live events, but it was a delight to have all that energy and passion distilled into this object of beauty which is The Time Traveller's Herbal.

Every page bursts with magic and whimsy, beautiful design and inspiring recipes.

As a herbalist myself, it is incredibly refreshing to have a book like this to reawaken the joy and creativity of a plant inspired life, rather than those rather dry and dusty old black and white tomes filled with lists of actions, ailments, inaccessible latin and head spinning medical terminology that we are forced to read as a student. They have their place but a different category altogether to Amanda's craftfully woven web of plant lore and wonder.

Buy this as a gift for the herbalist and plant enthusiasts in your life! They will love it ๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒฟ

While travelling around Central America with my former partner, we met a stray dog while strolling on a Caribbean beach on the island of Roatan, off the coast of Honduras. She soon became a permanent fixture of our time there, deciding to make herself our dog and never once leaving our sides!

She followed us every day to the Reggae Bar at the furthest end of the beach where we had found work in exchange for food and accommodation. She would return with us to our tent at the end of our shifts.

She made friends with the bar owners' dog called Rummy. So we decided to call her Whisky as it seemed to fit the duo, and reminded us of Scotland. Little did we know at the time, it would also become Whisky's future home!

She became our travel companion and guardian for the next 11 years through Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, USA, Netherlands, France, Spain, England, Wales and eventually back to Scotland where she lived out the end of her days.

I recently realised that it's been 11 years since she died and she is still very much a part of my heart, still visiting me in my dreams from time to time though few and far between.

I am feeling grateful today as she came to me in a dream last night. ๐Ÿฅฐ

The JOY I felt to be reunited with her has stayed with me all day long. In my dream, we spotted each other again from afar and she came running to me, making a beeline like she did so many times when she was still alive. We got to enjoy a cosy snuggle and delight of reuniting with a long lost friend.

We are still in Samhain season, when the veils are thin. Although all the Halloween celebrations are now over, astrological Samhain continues until the Sun is at 15 degrees of Scorpio which is Thurs 7th November.

Have you had any connections or messages from your loved ones who have gone beyond over this time? Or do you have a fun and magical story about you and your pet or familiar? ๐Ÿ’œโœจ

Hello flourishing friends, Fiona here. ๐Ÿ‘‹๐ŸŒบ

I've decided to do a Visibility Challenge this month because I've had a year (mostly!) off social media after my personal profile was hacked. I had to surrender to losing access to all the groups I used to host on FB.

So although I used to show up quite regularly on social media, I feel like I am slowly emerging from a long winter hibernation. In many ways it has come to feel like a blessing in disguise to take this time offline to nurture my energy after my father passed away last year.

I was mostly in Indonesia and Malaysia in the past 3 years helping my mum to care for my dad after he suffered a stroke, while continuing to run my business online, and continuing to go through a lot of transition this past year with commitments in both Scotland and SE Asia.

Although unintentional, losing my FB profile gave me a good reason to take some time to step back and explore some new directions, while continuing to look after my existing clients remotely.

I've been on 2 x 10 day silent retreats in the past year where I went completely offline, no screen time or entertainment of any kind other than being immersed in nature and meditation which felt blissful.

However, as a result, like The Hermit card in Tarot, I have struggled to fully return to share my work in the world.

I eventually created a new FB profile earlier this year after several months without one and taking a while to get back in the swing of things. It's become a cosy comfort zone to enjoy life offline, but I have a lot behind the scenes that I'd love to share so I feel this challenge will encourage me to gradually show up again after a long break! ๐Ÿ’œ

If you see my posts this month, I'd appreciate any support and encouragement as I've been having a lot of resistance and limiting my social media time as it feels overwhelming, but I intend to release my fears and playing small. With each post may it feel easier and shine brighter. ๐ŸŒป

Do you struggle with visibility sometimes, or loving it? What season are you in for shining your light in the world? ๐Ÿ’›โœจ

On the back of the Full Moon in Aries with this sign's physical focus on the head - as in leaping in "head first" (Diving into the Unknown, if you will?) - Rosemary came to mind.

I have been using the essential oil a lot as a pick-me-up recently!

And last month I had the good fortune to get a large bunch of pruned branches that someone had kindly left in the co-op swap shed in Innerleithen - a town local to me here in the Scottish Borders (yes, I'm back in Scotland for a few months).

There are many herbs that can help with focus (alongside all the necessary lifestyle adjustments, of course!), but one plant remedy which is my personal favourite and super simple is Rosemary to promote an alert mind and mental clarity.

Really refreshing as an essential oil diluted in a base oil to rub on temples or back of the neck for a burst of re-focusing, or burn it in an air diffuser. It's an excellent in a hair tonic to refresh the scalp, post bath, shower or workout massage oil all over for sore muscles too.

Can take drops as a tincture or the fresh herb in teas too! ๐ŸŒฟ

You may have heard the phrase "Rosemary for Remembrance" - it is of course renown as a memory booster and support. In astrology, the Moon also represents our connection to memories, the past and history.

How do you, or have you, worked with Rosemary? Are there any other benefits about it that you love?

Please do share with me in the comments, or let's continue the conversation at my recently opened new community space called "Dive into the Unknown".

We have several plant powered healers and herbalists in this space, so I'd love to invite some of our collective experience in the cauldron!

Check it out linked in my bio or over here ๐Ÿงœโ€โ™€๏ธ https://bit.ly/lets-dive-into-the-unknown ๐ŸŒŠ

Hello friends! Thanks for all your support and encouragement so far, as I continue preparing for my upcoming podcast.

Excited that it's already registered on Spotify and Apple podcasts, and I'm still in the process of getting it on other platforms.

Out of curiosity, I'd love to know, where do you go listen to podcasts? Where and when do you like listening to podcasts?

I have 2 pre-recorded episodes ready to go and today working on my intro blurb.

Any thoughts and feedback on the wording of the following is most welcome ๐Ÿ‘‡

Nettles โ€” Herb of Mars ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ”ฅ
A herb to empower the Aries New Moon cycle

Happy New Moon in Aries โ€” 7th-9th April 2024!

New moons are a great time to embrace fresh starts and new adventures, opportunities to begin a clean slate. Even more so when the moon is in fiery Aries, the 1st sign and leader of the Zodiac as it is today, not to mention that this year it coincides with a solar eclipse, amplifying its transformative and detoxifying energy.

Nettle is an ideal herb to connect with over the Aries New Moon cycle and season. Latin name: Urtica dioica ~ assigned a herb of Mars by herbal astrologers, with its potent defensive and fiesty fighting nature.

While the Sun is in Aries from around 20th March to 20th April, we are in Aries season. What better plant to befriend than Nettles!
