Getting an early diagnosis of dementia is important as there is support for you and your loved ones and 91% of people affected say there are benefits to getting a diagnosis.

A dietitian plays an important role in someone's dementia journey by giving practical, person-centred advice to the individual and their support network. This advice can support those living with dementia with their nutritional needs throughout their journey, and can involve optimising nutritional status, minimising weight loss and providing tailored dietary advice.

Communication and swallowing difficulties affect many people who have dementia. Speech and Language therapists can offer assessment, therapy and advice to help people maintain their engagement with communication, and they can facilitate safer and enjoyable eating and drinking.

If you need information about a dementia diagnosis or the support available to you, visit us today at the University Hospital Llandough, or Barry Hospital between 1:30 – 4PM.

Yesterday marked a proud moment for Wales as Royal Gwent Hospital became the first in the country to carry out colorectal surgery using the advanced Da Vinci surgical robot.

Consultant Surgeons Mr Codd and Mr Williamson of Aneurin Bevan University Health Board led this pioneering work, placing the Gwent area at the forefront of surgical innovation.

The Da Vinci robot allows surgeons to perform complex procedures through tiny incisions with greater precision, reduced trauma to the body, and faster recovery times for patients.

“This was a historic step forward for surgical care in Wales,” said Mr Jeremy Williamson, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon. “The enhanced accuracy of robotic-assisted surgery helped us perform delicate procedures with far less impact on the body - benefiting both outcomes and recovery.”

Mr Rhodri Codd added: “We're incredibly proud to bring this technology to our patients in Gwent and grateful to Aneurin Bevan University Health Board for supporting our vision to improve access to world-class surgical care.”

Congratulations to The National Organ Retrieval Service (NORS) at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, on being one of the first teams in the UK to use a pioneering, Normothermic Regional Perfusion (NRP), technique that successfully retrieved abdominal organs from two donors. The organs were successfully transplanted in different centres across the UK. Five lives were saved as a result, including four kidney recipients and one liver recipient. 👏

WHO has launched an appeal for US$ 1.96 billion to fulfil the requirements of the 2021 Strategic Preparedness and Response plan (SPRP2021).

The work in 2021 builds on the progress achieved in 2020, continues to support the response in countries towards suppressing transmission, reducing exposure, countering misinformation and disinformation, protecting the vulnerable, reducing mortality and morbidity rates and increasing equitable access of diagnostics and vaccines for all.

Donations received through the fund will go towards activities such as:

Suppress transmission through public health and social measures, including detecting and testing cases, tracing and quarantining contacts, shielding high-risk groups

Managing the infodemic and fighting disinformation and misinformation

Protect the most vulnerable by building vaccine acceptance, ensurance vaccine deployment in all countries and carrying out vaccination campaigns

Reduce mortality and morbidity and save lives by ensuring quality care, training of health workforce and access to essential commodities

Accelerate equitable access to new COVID-19 tools, including vaccines, diagnostics and therapeutics in all countries

WHO wants to thank all donors and partners who responded with generosity and solidarity to the appeals made in 2020, which allowed WHO to support countries and partners all over the world on their response.
