Have you heard of this? There may be no need to spend ages back patting, try this position to help naturally.
There's a lot more to anatomy and wind than just this of course, but it certainly can't do any harm to try!

Graphic inspired by Shel Banks IBCLC Lactation Consultant video on her YouTube channel.

** EDIT - This post has spread further than I imagined, clearly prevention is better than cure; being able to highlight potential dangers is part of my job. If this post has made you question if you would know first aid for this situation (or any other situation) join a local venue class (http://bookwhen.com/cardiffdaisyfirstaid) Or host a class at home (cardiff@daisyfirstaid.com)

⚠️ Attention ⚠️

🚿 2 years ago this baby suffered 2nd degree burns over 30% of his body from being accidentally sprayed with a garden hose and firefighters have issued a fresh warning recently.

👨‍🚒Hoping to prevent this type of accident from happening again, the fire department warned:

🚿 ‘’A garden hose exposed to direct sunlight during summer can heat the water inside the hose (not flowing) to 130-140 degrees Fahrenheit which can cause burns especially to children & animals.

✅ Let the water flow a few minutes to cool before spraying on people or animals"

After you give birth, you tell your own birth story. What you say and how you say it matters more than you know. Why doesn't anyone tell the inspiring ones?

Pods or nests are a softer type of sleep surface sometimes used instead of or in addition to a mattress, with areas that are raised or cushioned.

When sleeping, babies shouldn’t lie on or have anything soft around them, particularly their heads, as this can cause them to overheat and increases the risk of SIDS. Soft, squishy materials can also cover baby’s mouth and nose if they are pressed against it.

It is also important to remember that while there is a British Standard for cot mattresses, there is no standard for pods or nests as a sleeping place for babies.

This advice applies to all day and nighttime sleeps/naps.

If you’ve ever experienced a plugged duct, you may be surprised to learn that the tender lump in your breast is NOT the plug. It’s the milk backed up behind the plug. If you have a plugged duct, don’t massage BEHIND the plug. Instead, massage in FRONT of the lump of milk and towards the ni**le, as if trying to clear a pathway. Imagine if there was a traffic jam and you could magically clear the cars away: Would you start pushing forward at the end of the line (and risk causing more of a blockage) or start at the beginning of the line and work your way back? ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Begin by kneading close to the ni**le, pushing towards it. Then change the starting point so that you knead a little further back, moving closer to the lump of milk but always pushing towards the ni**le. Press your other hand on the opposite side of your breast as counter-pressure. Optional: Apply a small amount of edible oil to your hands before massaging to reduce friction. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Massaging in front of the plug is less painful and more effective than using the lump of milk behind it as a battering ram against a long stringy dried plug. Keep working it little by little because it took awhile to get there and it will take awhile to clear. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
FUN FACT: Have a milk bleb? A bleb represents an actual blocked duct, similar to the tip of white Elmer’s glue that has solidified with exposure to air.

As the holidays draw nearer, I begin to hear from women who are being offered dates for induction of labour ‘because of Christmas’. Then, after the holidays, I hear from women who regret having agreed to a pre-holiday induction and who want to be better informed ‘next time’. If only Santa would put good birth decision making books in every woman’s stocking before they need them! Induction of labour is the right decision for some women and not the right decision for others. So it’s important to find out as much as you can before deciding whether it’s the right decision for you. If you don’t know where to start, there are lots of free resources on my website, www.sarawickham.com Happy holidays! www.sarawickham.com/books/inducing-labour

Just had a lovely email from a past client..

“Victoria lead my ante natal class before I had my baby in September last year, this year she lead the baby massage class that I attended with my little girl. Not only is Victoria extraordinarily patient and kind, she is exceedingly knowledgeable and provided answers to questions that clinical professionals didn’t really have time to answer for me during my pregnancy. The antenatal class was brilliant and I enjoyed her common sense, how down to earth she is and her direct knowledge of everything from birth to caring for children afterwards. She is great at putting people at ease. I came to the antenatal class a little cynical and came out telling everyone I knew to attend. Having spoken to friends in London and elsewhere it seems we really lucked out with Victoria as our teacher. I always recommend her to pregnant friends and am grateful for the reassurance she provided to quite a paranoid mother to be!!”

In the video, Dr. Hamilton shows how he folds a baby's arms across its chest, then holds the child with one hand around its chest and one hand under its bottom, gently rocking back and forth.

One of these ladies is 40+2 and the other is 40+4 weeks pregnant. Both went into labour within 24 hours of these pictures. Both had 8lbs2oz babies, both girls.

Another thing both these baby bellies have in common? Their Symphisis Fundal Height is identical, 40cm.

When you hit 22-24 weeks in your pregnancy, your midwife will start measuring your belly. From your p***c bone, to the top part of your uterus - the fundus. This is how they monitor your babies growth curve. Usually the number of weeks you are is the number of centimetres you measure, give or take 2cm. If you fall off the curve your pregnancy has been following, your Midwife will offer you for necessary testing.

So the next time someone tells you you’re “too small” or “too big” for the number of weeks pregnant you are, point them this way!
