🎄 First Aid Christmas Tip: Choking

Christmas meals often involve foods that are high-risk for choking (turkey, nuts, grapes, mince pies).
If someone begins to choke, follow this sequence:

1. Encourage them to cough

If they are coughing effectively, keep them coughing.
Do not hit their back yet — coughing is the most effective way to clear an airway.

2. If the cough becomes ineffective → Give 5 back blows
• Stand to the side and slightly behind the person.
• Support their chest with one hand and lean them forward.
• Deliver up to 5 sharp back blows between the shoulder blades.

Check after each blow to see if the obstruction clears.

3. If still choking → Give 5 abdominal thrusts

• Stand behind them and place your arms around their waist.
• Make a fist and place it between the navel and the ribs.
• Pull sharply inward and upward up to 5 times.

Again, check after each one.

4. Alternate 5 back blows and 5 abdominal thrusts

Continue 5 + 5 cycles until:
• The object is cleared, or
• The person becomes unresponsive.

5. If they become unresponsive
• Call 999 immediately.
• Start CPR beginning with 30 chest compressions.
