This short quote is from our old friend, Ludwig Wittgenstein, who was instrumental in developing the Solution Focused approach.

Why is this relevant to our work?

Rather than getting bogged down in analysing inner emotional states, we emphasise observable outward changes as the criteria for progress.

Let's say your best hope from our work together is feeling better. How would you know you're "feeling better"? What is that 'outward criteria'?

You might smile more, have better sleep, better concentration, more patience, relaxed... The list is endless, and it depends on your specific context and circumstances.

We extend this then to the people around you. How would your best friend/partner/child/work bestie know you are feeling better? What would they notice as you're feeling better?

The visible behaviours show that the "inner process" of feeling better is happening. In our sessions, we don't get caught up in the invisible inner experience. We focus on the outward criteria that signal positive change.

Wittgenstein pointed out that purely private feelings lack meaning without some outward expression. SFBT applies this idea. If you want to improve an inner state, like feeling happier or less anxious, you identify the outward behaviours that will demonstrate that shift is occurring.

By paying attention to concrete, observable outcomes, the Solution Focused approach provides a straightforward roadmap for improving your life in tangible ways.

My best hopes regarding the blog are many. One of them is to nerd out about my profession. I love doing Solution Focused Hypnotherapy.

The other is to be transparent. I want to provide as much information to my clients/potential clients as possible about my way of working. Starting any therapy is a big decision, and it's not only a time and work investment towards a better future; it also has a financial element. Therefore, the least I can do is to talk openly about my practice.

What are you good at? How did you become skilled in this area?

These are among my favorite questions to ask my clients, and today, I invite you to reflect on them too.

It's easy to overlook our own strengths and talents, especially when our minds tend to focus on the negative. However, recognizing what we excel at and understanding how we acquired those skills can be a powerful reminder of the incredible resources we possess.

Often, we hesitate to acknowledge our strengths because we fear being perceived as self-important or egotistical. But embracing our abilities doesn't mean we have to boast or brag. Rather, it's an opportunity for self-appreciation and self-empowerment.

By consciously identifying our strengths, we open up a world of possibilities. We can harness these innate talents to shape our lives and achieve the outcomes we desire.

So take a moment today to reflect on what you're truly good at. What skills or qualities have you developed over time? Embrace them, celebrate them, and consider how they can propel you toward your goals.

Exciting news! My website is now live! In keeping with the solution focused approach's emphasis on minimalism, I aimed for simplicity and clarity when designing the site.

This serves as a handy excuse, too, as I built it myself, and my time and decision-making capacities are limited 😁 Since I'm quite chatty and very passionate about this modality, I'll also have a blog (I know, such an original idea!), where I'll just nerd out about various solution focused related topics, and I might even write something about Wittgenstein and how he relates to my work. My philosophy professors would be so proud.

The solution focused world is very particular about the use of language, specifically when it comes to adding new vocabulary to a client's experience or describing it with generic and wide-ranged, sometimes incredibly reductive labels, like depression or anxiety.

However, we still use them, and they have a function.

When I have a solution focused hypnotherapy session with someone, I'm not talking with a diagnosis/label but a real-life human being with hopes, resources, skills and coping strategies. This is a complicated topic I'm very passionate about, and I'm happy to discuss it any time, any day with clients/potential clients.

Keeping all of this in mind and knowing that I'm training to be a clinical hypnotherapist, I can work with people who experienced/experience:

Low mood/depression, anxious thoughts, feelings/anxiety (with or without a diagnosis), panic attacks, stress-related challenges, chronic pain and anger issues and the three "classic" hypnotherapy issues: fears/phobias, weight management and smoking cessation.

I'm authorised to charge student prices for new clients.

I thought long and hard about what to do now. So I've decided to ask myself what I often ask from clients: what are my best hopes until I graduate (in June 2023).

The answer is easy. I would like to have as many solution focused conversations (combined with hypnotherapy, obvs) with as many people as possible.

This approach has a wide range and power; money shouldn't be a barrier.

Therefore, the pricing is flexible; new clients can pay whatever they feel comfortable with, between £10.00 and £35.00. No questions asked. A session is 60 minutes online.

I might sound like the worst businessperson ever, and I'm okay with it, I promise.

The emphasis is working with clients through this unique lens: creating new narratives, identifying where we want to go, and what we have in our lives that's already working and how we can utilise and enhance those unique skills, resources or coping mechanisms we already have in place.

Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions. I spend too much time on social media anyway; I'd finally do something useful.

On my way home yesterday after an insightful training weekend, this saying popped into my head. Not surprisingly, it's related to the solution focused approach.

Getting lost in new ideas and ways of living and engaging with others is particularly easy in this age of podcasts and "10 quick tips about better managing your mental health" articles. I'm pretty sure they're all valuable and well-intended. They might miss the point, though: not every person has the time/energy/means to follow through, and it might even be utterly alien in their unique circumstances.

This is why, in my sessions, I try to keep things simple. We know (in some cases, we might have forgotten for various reasons) how we want to live our lives. My goal is to uncover them with a few (okay, with quite a lot of) questions, firmly keeping the discussion in our everyday, seemingly mundane life, where the real magic happens, utilising our current resources.

We don't need to reinvent the wheel all the time. Once we have found the working bits, let's keep doing them.
