If you are addicted to alcohol, drugs
Sex,gambling, food, tech or anything else that is making you feel uncomfortable or makes your life miserable, then have a think about the following statement from a speaker at an AA meeting.

“ I am not responsible for the thoughts that come into my head. However I am responsible for how long they stay there, and I am responsible for how I act on them.”

Most addictions will have the person physically craving for more but equally alongside that is the mental obsession to that addiction.

Those who are involved in a 12 step programme ie AA,NA,CA and GA start to build up that mental defence to their drug of choice by listening and learning from others who have managed to stay clean and sober for a while.

They then start to have a choice on how long that thought stays in their head and do they act on it or not.

As a therapist who has studied addictions along with these 12 step groups that have a reasonable success rate I can help people who have addictions but might not feel comfortable going to these groups and would rather work on an individual basis.

If this might be you then please message me so we can have an initial chat to see if I might be able to help you.

When I chose 5 years ago to start my training to become a therapist it was a journey that was deeply ingrained in me to follow my passion for trying to help others.

I had served on the children’s panel in Midlothian for 5 years, I have tried to help others who have a problem with drinking for over 20 years, and I try to help veterans who suffer from PTSD.

As a therapist I feel deeply humbled and privileged when a client puts their trust in me to see if I may be able to help ease their pain and problems.

Sometimes I think “ Am I doing the right thing?” I get the odd feelings of imposter syndrome now and again, which makes me doubt myself and makes me feel anxious and uncomfortable. This to me is a great reminder of exactly how my clients could be feeling when they start therapy.

However when I get a card like the one in this post from a client and read what they have written, it makes me feel like I am doing exactly what I should be doing, helping others to feel better about themselves and that will do for me.

To anyone who might be struggling there is hope, and you are stronger than you think.

If you feel like giving up, read this:

1. This is a Phase.
Tough times are just a phase. They don't last forever. Life is a cycle of highs and lows. Remember, this too shall pass. You're in the middle of the storm now, but clear skies are ahead. Hold on.

2. You Are Stronger Than You Think.
Never underestimate your resilience.

- You've survived 100% of your bad days.
- Inside you, there is an inner strength.
- Your potential is greater than any problem.

Remember, you're stronger and more capable than you believe.

3. Small Steps Count.
Progress isn't always a leap forward. Sometimes it's tiny, almost imperceptible steps. Each step, no matter how small, brings you closer to your goal. Celebrate every bit of progress. Slow and steady can still win the race. Keep moving forward.

4. Remember Your 'Why'.
Think back to the reasons why you started. Reconnect with your motivation and your goals.

5. Failure is a Stepping Stone.
It's okay to fall but it's important to rise again. Every setback brings learning opportunities. Remember, every great success story involves overcoming obstacles. Keep going. Your story is being written.

6. Practice Self-Care.

Self-care is essential, especially during tough times.

- Eat nutritious food
- Exercise regularly
- Get adequate sleep
- Connect with loved ones
- Engage in activities that bring joy.

It’s not selfish, it's survival. Your well-being matters.

7. It's Okay to Ask for Help.
Remember, you're not alone in this journey.

- Reach out to friends, family, or professionals
- Open up about your struggles
- Seek support when you need it

Strength isn't just about enduring in silence. It's also knowing when to ask for help.

To my friends and readers, Fight for yourself. No matter how difficult it becomes, never let yourself give in. After some time, your spark will eventually return. You will come out happier, healthier, and wiser. We are in this together.

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that comes and goes in a seasonal pattern.

SAD is sometimes known as "winter depression" because the symptoms are usually more apparent and more severe during the winter.

Some people with SAD may have symptoms during the summer and feel better during the winter.
Symptoms of SAD can include:
A persistent low mood
A loss of pleasure or interest in normal everyday activities
irritability
Feelings of despair, guilt, and worthlessness
Feeling lethargic (lacking in energy) and sleepy during the day
Sleeping for longer than normal and finding it hard to get up in the morning
Craving carbohydrates and gaining weight
Difficulty concentrating
Decreased s*x drive

For some people, these symptoms can be severe and have a significant impact on their day-to-day activities.

What can you do to help yourself?

Lifestyle measures – including getting as much natural sunlight as possible.
Exercising regularly and managing your stress levels.
Light therapy – where a special lamp called a light box is used to simulate exposure to sunlight.
Talking therapies – such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) or counselling.
Antidepressant medicine – such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
If you are experiencing SAD and would like some help please feel free to contact me.

This reminds us where we will be in life.
We never want to forget our past as it defines us.

We also can't live the majority of our lives worrying about the future and the " What ifs".

The present can be hard and painful to deal with, it puts you outside your comfort zone sometimes.

If we can learn to work with our feelings and emotions both positive and negative then we can learn and grow from this.
