As a family we moved to Pentyrch, Glamorgan in 1978. From then on my parents worshipped most weeks here in St Catwg's church. When they eventually left this earth, both had their cremated remains put in the graveyard where they had worshipped for so many years.

I am sure that many of you have similar stories.

Anyone got an heirloom that has genealogical meaning? This is an oil painting done by my grandfather's older brother, in 1897. It is of their mother's family home in Horbling, Lincolnshire. Have actually been to visit the house myself.

Aside from the normal birth, death, marriage, and census documents there are loads of other documents that help add meaning to the lives of our ancestors.

See attached a copy of my Dad's acceptance letter to Grammar School in 1943... I even have a set of his school reports, makes for fun reading.

Ever thought where your relatives served during their military service? My grandfather served with the 16th Battalion of Lancashire Fusiliers, and was in the battles of the Somme.

Was your ancestor talented? I never knew my grandfather William Akister, as he died in 1951 before I was born. He drew this in 1922, my family got it framed for me a couple of years ago. Now we have a bit of my grandfather hanging in our living room.

Many years ago I went with my parents to search for ancestors in a graveyard in county Durham. It was funny to see how excited my mum was to find someone the names of whom she recognized. They were definitely relatives of hers. It was also nice how that experience helped bring us together as a family.. These same experiences can exist for any family who seeks out their ancestors together. Involve your children, make it a family matter!

When you research your family tree, do you actually want to know where they lived? Are you lucky enough to find the house, and it hasn't been destroyed to make a 'new development'?
Quite a large family once lived in one of these small homes on this terrace about 100 years ago!

My Grandfather, William Goodliffe Akister, was one of the 'Salford pals' in the Lancashire Fusiliers, in WW1. Did any of your ancestors serve during the first world war, too?
(He was one of the lucky ones who made it home)

It is fun tracking down the 'detail'... My Dad attended this school in the 1930's. Although there's been a change of ownership... there's not much changed to the building!
I wonder if my Dad would recognize if he were still alive?
