A bit of rock tourism in Yosemite valley the other year, I didn't quite manage this one but I certainly enjoyed having a look!

Hundreds of valley visitors drive past this crag every day unaware of the upside down shuffling shenanigans going on.

This throwback picture popped up the other day , it's from a BMC Youth meet 5 years ago. I got paired with who crushed a bunch of Froggatt and Millstone classics. It's been great to see him go from strength to strength climbing 8c+ and E8 in the last few years. I even saw a picture of him with some ice axes this winter... The future is bright...

This little dude really enjoyed a day out at the crag the other day. Some top tips for climbing with a toddler in tow;

Lots of snacks and weather appropriate clothing. Bring shade if you are somewhere hot (perfect for napping).

Bring a favourite toy and keep them entertained and engaged.

Have realistic expectations of the climbing you will achieve and avoid projecting your grown up idea of climbing onto them, let them discover and explore at their own speed.

Super lightweight helmets in small sizes work well and can be more comfortable than kid specific helmets.

Find some adventure buddies!

I've climbed all over the world, but Scotland is hard to beat for climbing in beautiful locations. The sea looked very inviting on this sunny day on Orkney and there was some cool looking deep water soloing at this crag, but I didn't fancy a dip in the freezing cold sea!

Checking gear regularly is important, do you know what to look for when you inspect your climbing kit?

Key points to check;

Any deformation, corrosion or excessive wear to metal components?
Any excessive play or movement in the loves?
Any frayed wire?
Any damage to the sling?
Age?

Most damage means that gear needs to be retired (to the bin or recycled), but for this cam a trigger wire repair will see it working again soon.

What does success look like? Getting to the top is nice, but is it really the most important reward from climbing? What is success and failure? I'd say that failure is not learning anything from a climbing experience, whether you get to the top or not.

One of the most impressive bits of rock out there, shame the approach is one of the grimmest! Taken from halfway up Washington Column on the other side of the valley. No shortage of rock in Yosemite.

Neil enjoying a day scrambling on Tryfan's North Ridge, one of the best grade 1 scrambles around. On top of the scrambling we also worked on some navigation and emergency rope work skills, perfect for feeling more confident in the mountains.

.nelson.5243 enjoying the wild Bosigran aka Commando Ridge last year. This route had been one the list for a while and certainly didn't disappoint. Its a classic long moderate ridge formed out of perfect granite way down in the depth of Cornwall.

Is your scrambling ropework up to scratch? Here's a team who were getting ready for their MCI assessment a few years ago. The Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor qualification requires you to be able to look after people and teach them in any summer climbing or mountaineering environment. Here the leader is managing a team up a section of easy scrambling ground using short roping technique.
