Cowper's Mobility Centre in Penrith recently made a very generous donation of specialist equipment to Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw.

At a time when they were making the difficult decision to close their Mobility Centre, they chose to ensure this equipment could continue to make a difference in their local community - a truly thoughtful gesture.

The donated profiling bed and pressure mattress have already helped provide comfort and dignity, and raised vital funds through our Furniture Shop to support local families.

It's kindness like this that helps us continue to care for people across Cumbria, and we couldn't do it without the support of local businesses like Cowper's.

While Cowper's Mobility Centre is closing, Cowper's Chemist in Penrith, which has served the community since 1899, remains very much open, continuing its longstanding commitment to local people.

Staff at Joseph Cowper Ltd (Cowper's Chemist) celebrated Angela Sowerby's retirement after 53yrs, with an afternoon tea at Greystoke Castle. Angela started working at Cowper's Chemist in 1973 in the Dispensary and finished her career as the company book keeper. We all wish Angela well for her retirement and hope she has more time to spend in her garden and reading the books she enjoys. Congratulations Angela.

Sad New for Cowper's Mobility Centre (part of Joseph Cowper Ltd). Along with many small independent high street businesses, we find ourselves increasingly and unsuccessfully competing against large corporate chains and online sellers. This, coupled with the recent financial budgetary pressures implemented by the Government which has affected so many small businesses, has meant we have taken the sad and difficult decision to close COWPER’S MOBILITY CENTRE at the end of April.

We want to thank our wonderful customers for their custom over the past 11 years and hope you will support our closing down sale, where you will be able to pick up lots of great bargains!

We want to reassure Penrith and the Eden Valley that COWPER’S CHEMIST, King Street WILL CONTINUE AS NORMAL, as it has done since 1899!

Please support local independent businesses if possible – Use them or lose them!

Following our recent meeting at the House of Lords where Phil and I, alongside fellow Pharmacists, highlighted the financial difficulties which all Pharmacies are experiencing, we were absolutely delighted to welcome the MP for Penrith & Solway, Markus Campbell-Savours MP, to Cowper’s Chemist. He spent time listening to the complicated issues that surround Pharmacy funding as a whole and took the opportunity to experience one of the NHS Pharmacy initiatives available to patients by getting his blood pressure checked. The Hypertension case finding service aims to identify those over 40yrs who may be at risk from high blood pressure.

As reported both at local and national levels, NHS Pharmacy funding has decreased in real terms over the last 10-15 years whilst demand for our services, from patients, has never been higher. The National Pharmaceutical Association (NPA) alongside Community Pharmacy England (CPE) and Community Pharmacists nationwide are calling on the government to recognise the vital role which Community Pharmacy plays within the NHS, and to ensure pharmacies are reimbursed properly for the work they carry out with a strategy for vital long term funding.
