Just home from a really interesting couple of days at Therapy Expo, some really fascinating speakers and inspiring talks. Amazing to see the diverse range of approaches and ways of thinking about Massage, Sports Therapy and Physiotherapy.

It’s exciting to begin to process the vast amount of information - putting new ideas into my practice and working out areas for future study.

Thanks to everyone who helped organise this great event!

Why might I want a Sports Massage?

As runners we give our bodies a good old beating! Whether it’s the many hours of training, pounding the pavement, flying down the fell or grinding up the other side - our muscles and connective tissues are working hard.

A Sports Massage can help with the recovery process - helping to maintain full range of movement, relieving muscle tension, improving circulation and healing - and perhaps most importantly alleviating soreness.

Combined with all the other good stuff - eating well, sleeping lots, strength work etc… regular massage (or even a one off) can help you keep moving well, stay injury free and progressing towards your goals.

If you think a Sports Massage could be for you then get in touch, I look forward to helping you.

I want to keep doing the things I love doing for many years to come, I want to race hard and have awesome adventures in the mountains. So how to keep the body in good shape and functioning well?

As with most people there are constraints on time and money which means prioritising some things over others. Should I spend my money on a gym membership, a running coach, an S&C coach, supplements, therapists, nutrition, stupid gadgets…

So here are my non-negotiable. (This is as much to remind myself as anyone else of might be interested!)

1. Sleep - lots of it, as much as possible!

2. Sensible, consistent training - the overwhelming majority of times I have hurt myself have been doing something I wasn’t prepared for. Maybe I’m learning with age, time will tell 😂

3. Strength work - the first thing to get dropped when life gets busy, and the thing I most often have to remind myself to get back on with.

4. Mobility, Yoga, stretching, foam rolling, Pilates… some combination of all these things. I’d love to be one of those people who can run forever with none of this stuff and be fine, but I’m not and I know I’m not.

5. Eating - lots! As healthy as possible but just lots and lots…

6. Massage - I love a good massage and I try to go reasonably regularly. I know I come out feeling like I can move better and more freely.

What is on your list?

Well that was an interesting few days…

I’ve been training well this year and have been building up nicely for the start of the English Fell Running Championships - the first race being Flower Scar in Todmorden on Saturday.

Thursday evening I lifted Lily out of her car seat and had that immediate and awful feeling that most folk of a certain age will be familiar with - “I’ve done my back in”. I hate it. There’s no quicker way to go from feeling strong and athletic to old and frail, than hobbling around with a crook back.

I drove 2 hours down to Todmorden Friday morning and could barely walk when I got out. I was very lucky to sneak a last minute appointment with a Sports Therapist who gave me a great massage, getting some movement back and helping the muscles in spasm to relax.

I spent the rest of the day either walking slowly or rolling around on the floor!

Saturday morning I was good to go and absolutely delighted to be able to race hard and give it my all. The back held up and I was really pleased with how I ran.

My take away from this long ramble is just how much of a difference a good Sports Massage can make to the right person at the right time. In this case the difference between achieving my goal and not even getting the chance to try. Which makes me all the more excited to be offering my Sports Massage treatments to those who could benefit…

The human body is pretty incredible and immensely complicated, so it’s good to be reminded of the basics!

“You are a person. You have a body. Look after it.”

Excellent advice from the wonderful Oliver Jeffers.

It’s a pretty obvious statement that excercise is good for us - physically, mentally & emotionally. It is widely accepted that spending time in nature is also great for our well-being, so it makes sense in my mind that combining the two gives us a powerful does of ‘goodness’.

BUT… certainly with running, I’ve seen that all too often this simple activity can be complicated by comparison, ego, Strava, heart rate monitors, training plans, competition etc… to the point where the very thing that should be an outlet to help deal with the stresses of life, becomes another source of stress.

So, today’s challenge for everyone is to leave all the tech at home once in a while and do something purely for the joy of doing it.

Some things I know help me with this:
- Get up high for a sunset/sunrise
- Check the forecast for possible cloud inversions
- Add some fun scrambly terrain to the route
- Explore somewhere new

A piece of paper that took a lot of time and effort!

It has been a real journey to get this far, I’ve learnt a huge amount - obviously about the human body, anatomy, sports injuries, massage techniques, healing etc… - but also about myself and the lovely people that have trusted me to practice on them.

I just wanted to say a big thankyou to everyone that has helped me out along the way 🙏
