In modern times, a wake has come to be known as the refreshments served after a funeral service, where the mourners can share memories of the person who has passed. But have you ever wondered why a gathering for someone who has passed away is called a "wake"? 🤔
The history behind this tradition is more fascinating (and practical!) than you might think.

The term "wake" comes from the Old English word wacian, meaning "to keep watch" or "to be awake." And that's exactly what our ancestors did. For centuries, before the advent of modern medicine, a wake was a vigil held over the body of the deceased, often for several days and nights in the family home.
So why the long watch? There were a few key reasons:

🕰️ To Be Certain: In a time before stethoscopes and ECGs, it was difficult to be 100% sure someone had actually passed away and wasn't in a deep coma. The wake served as a waiting period to ensure there were no signs of life before burial. A slightly spooky but very practical precaution!

🛡️ Protection: The vigil was also about protecting the deceased. In a spiritual sense, mourners would pray for the soul's safe passage to the afterlife and ward off any malevolent spirits. On a more practical level, it guarded the body from animals or even potential body snatchers in later centuries.

❤️ Community Support: The wake was, and still is, a crucial time for the community to come together. Neighbours and friends would visit to offer condolences, share the burden of grief with the family, bring food, and begin the process of collective mourning.
The famous Irish wake is a great example of this, blending solemn prayer with a lively celebration of the person's life through storytelling, music, and feasting.

Todays version of a wake has evolved, but their core purpose remains the same: to honour the person who has gone, to support the living, and to share memories together. It’s a tradition rooted in caution, faith, and the enduring human need for community in times of loss. 🕯️

We had the great honour of assisting a family who are not from the area, who wanted their loved ones ashes scattered in The Lake District, a place that held so many cherished memories for them. It is always a profound honour to help families fulfil these final wishes, ensuring their loved one's are returned to a special place with dignity and respect. We hope it brings the family comfort knowing that they are now at peace, surrounded by the beauty of The Lakes.
