Second Space Acupuncture and Feldenkrais

Second Space Acupuncture and Feldenkrais Acupuncture in Penzance based on a blend of ancient Chinese art and modern Western science Second Space is owned by Nicki.

Nicki has a Diploma in Acupuncture from the Scientific School of Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture (SSOMA) in Tunbridge Wells. The Dean (and her teacher) is Dr Dan Keown, formerly a doctor in Emergency Medicine, and author of the Amazon Bestseller Spark in the Machine and The Uncharted Body. She has a 25 year background within the NHS, working as a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist specialising in blood sciences. She then worked more clinically as a Lead Transfusion Practitioner, and as a Service Manager for Theatres and Recovery. Due to ill health, she could no longer remain in this role. Acupuncture was one of the alternative therapies that helped in her health journey, and wanting to know how and why it worked led to her studying it. She was attracted to SSOMA due to the teaching being grounded in Western science and medicine. Nicki is now practicing this wonderful healing modality in Penzance. It utilises tiny needles to to influence the body's natural ability to heal. It taps in to the body's intrinsic intelligent energy, known in Chinese as Qi. By using a knowledge of the channel system within the body, the style of acupuncture practiced will help to remove pathogenic energy, strengthen the entire organ system and give the body time and space to heal. The treatments are done on a one to one basis. A full consultation is included prior to the needles being inserted, and then left for approximately 20 minutes whilst the patient relaxes in the quiet space of the treatment room. Treatment is individual, and a course of treatment is usually 6 to 10 sessions. Nicki is also excited to be training in the Feldenkrais Method, a somatic based system that educates the body via movement and neuroplasticity to move in a more effective, efficient and pain-free manner. She will add this knowledge to her Acupuncture practice as it develops, bringing a wealth of experience with the human self to best encourage it's innate ability to heal.

What if I told you that you are the most important asset you have? Would you believe me? Do you give yourself the care and attention you deserve?

I learnt the hard way that I need to care for myself. 7 years ago I didn’t know the meaning of rest and recovery. I surfed to recover from biking. I ran to recover after a 10 hour shift at work. I was planning an expedition to the Arctic, across the ice to the Northern Pole of Inaccessibility, the furthest point from land in the Arctic Sea. I was always on the go. I didn’t think I was breakable. And then…. Then I broke.

I’ve had to learn to care for me. I’ve learnt rest, deep rest. I have some non-negotiables now in my routine. I eat really well. I have good sleep hygiene practices. I get outside. I move (gently, though, now!). I have acupuncture. I breathe and connect with nature. I cherish my friends and connections. I sauna. This is the great facility heylcrossfit. It’s brilliant. The ice bath is a beast though 🥶

Without your health, without movement, when you are unable to do the things that mean the most to you. Whether that’s a run, a ride, a surf, playing with your kids or grandkids or going for a walk with your loved ones. You might be unable to do your job. That sucks. Don’t do what I did. Look after yourself today.

What have you done today to maintain your biggest asset?

🧣There’s a distinctly autumnal feel in the air. Yesterday for the first time in a long time I discussed wearing a scarf or a beany to keep the wind away from the top of the neck.

🧣At the occiput (base of the skull💀) there are three acupuncture points with ‘Feng’ in the name which is translated as ‘wind’. The ancient Chinese believed the wind could blow pathogenic forces from the environment into the body 🌬️. It is advised to wrap this area up well, particularly on a windy day. 🧣

I’m not ready for a change in season yet 🍃💨. Are you?

I’ve had a break this summer from the socials, back again now…..

Just had a gentle rejuvenating yoga practice on the patio in the sun. I was joined by swallows, finches and a robin. Now off to plan some social posts, which I find really hard, and then I have some patients booked this afternoon. Some movement and meditation helps balance me out. What have you done today to balance you?

My new clinic at home in Ludgvan has opened, I also continue at Clarence House Therapy Centre in Penzance. I’m grateful for all the support so far to help establish my little acupuncture business.

✋One of the questions about acupuncture is always which conditions it can help. This is hard to answer as there are so many! These are just a few I've treated recently.

🙃There are often unexpected benefits too as the Chinese link conditions which in western medicine are disparate and unlikely to be thought of as linked. As the Chinese model is holistic, the knee pain you have could easily be linked to the persistent cough. I know - weird right?!

🤱When you view the connections that remain as the embryo forms and the cells move apart it all makes sense. It also helps to show why a few small needles can influence your innate ability to heal.
