Irritable Bowel Syndrome Awareness

IBS is one of the most common digestive conditions and is defined by belly pain along with a change in bowel habits. IBS is thought to be caused by the gut and brain over-communicating. In other words, talking to one another too much.

The most common symptoms of IBS include:

🟣Belly (abdominal) cramps - they can be uncomfortable or painful
🟣Abnormal bowel habits - you could have diarrhoea, constipation, or both
🟣Wind, bloating and distension (a widening of the girth of the belly)
🟣Mucus present in poo
🟣Other symptoms can include feeling tired and sick, backache, and bladder issues

🟣Autism Awareness Month🟣

More than one in 100 people are autistic and there are at least 700,000 autistic adults and children in the UK. These numbers are not the same as the number of people with an autism diagnosis. They are based on research about the true figure, which is likely to be higher. More research is needed to know for sure.

People of all ages, genders and ethnicities can be autistic. But people from marginalised groups can face more barriers to getting a diagnosis. This can be because of a lack of awareness about the true diversity of autistic people.

If you feel you may be autistic and are interested in an assessment, please contact the surgery for more information.

BOWEL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Is your bowel cancer screening kit sitting at the back of a drawer?

If you’re 54 to 74, you should have received your NHS bowel cancer screening (FIT) kit through the post. That’s because the NHS automatically sends a kit every two years to everyone in that age range and is gradually including people aged 50 to 53 too.

Out of every 5,000 people who use their test kit, nine turn out to have cancer. But if it’s spotted earlier, the chances of recovering from bowel cancer are higher.
The test can be done in the comfort of your home and only needs a tiny sample of poo to test for signs of cancer.

April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month so there’s no better time to dig out the bowel cancer testing kit that you hid in that bottom drawer or look out for it in the post. And then put it by the loo. Don’t put it off.

Find out more about bowel cancer screening at nhs.uk/bowel.

🩵Parkinson's Awareness Month🩵

Parkinson’s isn’t only a movement disorder. It also affects the brain circuits involved in mood, motivation, stress response and thinking. This means symptoms such as anxiety, depression, low motivation, hallucinations, and cognitive changes are common. Nearly 50% of people with Parkinson’s experience anxiety or depression at some point. What many people do not know is that these symptoms aren’t “just emotional reactions” — they can be part of the condition itself, caused by changes in brain chemistry and the stress of adapting to a long‑term illness.

🧠 Brain Tumour Awareness Month 🧠

There are many different types of brain tumour. Primary brain tumours start in the brain and are usually named after the cell they develop from, or the part of the brain they start in. The most common type of brain tumours are called gliomas, which develop from cells that look like glial cells in the brain or spinal cord.
