🫂World Alzheimer's Day - 21st September🫂

More than 55 million people across the world are affected by this terrible disease.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia in the UK. It’s caused by a build-up of proteins in the brain which damage the brain cells’ ability to transmit messages.

The symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease tend to get worse over time. They include:

- difficulty remembering recent events (often retaining a good memory for past events)
- poor concentration
- difficulty recognising people or objects
- poor organisational skills
- confusion
- disorientation
- slow, muddled or repetitive speech
- difficulty performing everyday tasks such as cooking, paying bills, and shopping
problems with decision-making

There is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but medication is available to help slow its progression.

🫁PULMONARY FIBROSIS AWARENESS MONTH 🫁

ℹ What is pulmonary fibrosis?
The term pulmonary fibrosis describes scar tissue in the lungs.

Scar tissue can make it difficult for the lungs to work normally. Some people with interstitial lung disease (ILD) may develop pulmonary fibrosis. Interstitial lung disease: a group of diseases that affect the interstitium of the lungs. The interstitium is the space in the lungs between the air sacs (alveoli) and the blood vessels.

🫁 What happens in the lungs when you have pulmonary fibrosis?
Scar tissue forms in the interstitium and this area becomes thicker. This makes the lungs stiff and less stretchy, which can make you feel short of breath (breathless). Several different mechanisms can cause a cough. Change to the structure of the lungs is one potential cause.

Scar tissue makes it more difficult for oxygen to move between the alveoli and the blood. Because of this, there is less oxygen available for the body to use.

It happens when your immune system overreacts to an infection and starts to damage your body's own tissues and organs.

See the infographics below for information about sepsis.

If you suspect yourself, someone you know, or a child has sepsis, do not delay, and call 999 or present to A&E.

Mental Health Self Help Guides

One in six of us will experience mental ill health. At some point in our lives we will know someone who is struggling. That could be us personally or a partner, family member, friend or colleague. Sooner or later, we will all know someone who is struggling.

The Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust have written a series of self help guides covering a wide range of topics such as depression, anxiety and stress which offer users the opportunity to find out more about the causes of mental health issues and provide tools to work through feelings and emotions.

The self help guides contain verified information and are written by NHS Clinical Psychologists with contributions from service users, healthcare and voluntary sector staff.

They’re not intended to replace the advice of a medical professional. If it’s not a medical emergency and you’re unsure about what to do next, our self help guides can suggest next steps.

Where is Best? Minor Injury Unit/Urgent Treatment Centre

It can be difficult to know which service is best to attend when you have a minor illness or minor injury. If you or someone you are with has any of the below, it is sensible to attend a Minor Injury Unit (MIU). There are 9 MIUs across Cornwall including Camborne, Falmouth and Helston. West Cornwall Hospital in Penzance is an Urgent Treatment Centre; it can deal with all of the below and if they are more serious but *not* life-threatening.

Follow the link to the Cornwall ICB's guide to MIUs, UTCs and A&E:
