We live in a wild and windy spot, less than a mile from the sea in 3 directions, so when we bought this house, we planted 400 hedging trees (with the help of friends) to create shelter and privacy. The added bonus is that the hedges are full of birds nesting and the garden is now filled with birdsong.

Of all the birds we see on a daily basis, the wren is my favourite. For such a tiny bird it can be very loud, especially when threatened.

I did this panting, entitled "It's time to be heard", as part of my oracle card series. The wren reminds us that you are never too small to be heard, and that your values and dreams are always worth standing up for.

This year has been a "Time to be heard" sort of a year for me. I have finally listened to the voice inside me that has been saying "it's time to believe that you can make a living doing your soulwork" and I have begun to open my mind, raise the bar, and take the leap.

The life coach Mandy Morris uses the metaphor of a box, saying that we keep ourselves (in every area of our lives) in some sort of a box, with a ceiling and a basement/floor, and that in order to grow and blossom we need to recognise where we are containing ourselves below a too low ceiling, or hovering above a too sparse a basement.

The Wren's gift can really help in this process; can help us to expand our too small voice; our too small box, so we can finally sing the song we were born to sing.

I use the word Sacred a lot. It is not a word that I used until I came to Cornwall, but once I began visiting the "Sacred sites"; the standing stones, stone circles and holy wells that abound in this area, I understood how important the quality of sacredness is to me.

Of course, it doesn't have to be linked to a designated place; I believe one can experience and create sacred place and space almost anywhere, with the right intention and open heartedness.

When I trained in the "Virtues Project", one of the 5 core strategies we learned to facilitate is "Honouring the Sacred". That was what drew me to the Virtues Project; the fact that it was an organisation who put such value on what is sacred to us individually and what we need to hold sacred both individually and collectively.

Most of the life coaching work I do, as well as my painting, involves finding our deepest connection to what is sacred, both within and around us, and finding ways to honour and celebrate that.

My favourite sacred site in West Cornwall is Boscawen'un stone circle. This is a painting that honours it

This is a bitter sweet time of year for me. I love being warm, and I love swimming in the sea, and as August draws to a close I can feel Autumn around the corner.....and then it's only one season until winter!

But I do love Autumn; I love the colours, I love the warmth that is lingering in the earth and the sea, and there's something unique about the quality of the light in September; it feels so magical. So I am sad to say goodbye to summer, but opening my arms to the riches of September.

Do you have things to look forward to at this transitional time?

this painting is one of my oracle card images; it's entitled "Tending the Fire". It's of a beautiful place by the river Dart that we used to camp at (and would love to revisit). We always visited at the end of the summer, once it started to get quieter. I think the painting captures the quality of light I mentioned.

Happy Bank Holiday.

Down here in West Cornwall it's sometimes hard to feel relaxed because it is so busy with people on holiday! But it is so important to take time off, isn't it?

Wherever you are and whatever you're doing, I hope you get to take some space for you.

Big love to you xx

August bank holiday is nearly here, and here in Cornwall - as for many other coastal areas - it's often the busiest day of the year.

Although I absolutely love Summer, I find the busy-ness; the crowds and the traffic - if I venture out from my off-the-beaten-track home - start to wind me up and stress me out!

The advantage of living in West Cornwall though is that there are always places where you can escape the crowds if you know where to look. There is literally nothing as heavenly as finding a sun-dappled mossy place to curl up in, where all you can hear are the birds and the bees and the crickets!!

That's the sort of deeply replenishing 'activity' we'll be doing on my women's retreat next month; I can't wait!!

This is the oldest painting of mine that I still have around. I painted it during a period of intense grief, after the break up of my marriage.

It began as a painting of a tree; I was feeling like I needed to feel more grounded and I thought painting a tree might provide that....but my subconscious (or my inner guide) had other ideas!! The central figure began to emerge from the tree's trunk fairly immediately, and then it became clear that she was holding a baby. Once I'd finished painting the mother and child, the outer figure started to appear. It may sound strange to those of you who don't paint - that things can "appear"!! Obviously my hand is involved in the process, but it really does feel like my mind is not involved at all, and something magical happens that I don't have much control over.

The emergence of final figure and the beautiful compassion in their embrace made me realise that the whole painting was a part of my healing process; that each figure related to a part of myself, and I was finally finding a way to feel held in my grief. I've kept this painting in my Retreat room for decades and it continues to remind me that I am held.

Now that I think about it, maybe this painting was the catalyst for me getting more deeply involved in Arts for Health; the recognition it gave me that creativity connects us to our deepest knowing, and our ability to heal and grow, helped me to trust that I could enhance and enrich my art teaching and my life coaching practices by integrating a bit of each in the other.

My art students often say "this is so much more than an art class"! And my lifecoaching clients are often blown away by how a creative activity can bring magical transformation. It's no wonder that I love my work!!
