I was listening to a talk by one of my most favourite motivational writers a while back.
He was chatting away about weight gain, being uncomfortable in your skin.
About doing more positive things to gain mental clarity and maintain fitness and keep that visceral fat build up to a minimum.
This one thing stood out for me so powerfully during the talk, that I just had to share.
No, this is not another preachy weight loss/how to lose weight talk
Or
A rampage about how sugar is as addictive as co***ne!
Or
A lecture about how sugar destroys your neural pathways which increases your chances of having Alzheimer’s, Dementia, brain fog or neuropathy in your hands and feet.
Or
A lesson about how sugar creates, feeds and prolongs disease in your body such as cancer, diabetes or arthritis, to name a few.
Or
A course on how sugar disrupts our hormones and causes imbalance which leads to rapid aging, mood swings, anxiety and depression.
All these are intense and valid reasons to stop eating sugar by the way.
It's far more practical than that...
Super practical!
This is about being aware of the hidden and not so hidden sugars that we consume daily. The sneaky and not so sneaky ways we consume this drug at sky rocketing levels.
No wonder we are dis-Eased younger and younger at alarming rates.
Do you ever read food labels?
Do you actually understand what the label is telling you?
Do you know how much sugar you are actually consuming on a daily basis?
Do you understand over time the extent of the havoc the hidden sugars create in your body?
Does it ever occur to you to wonder…
Hmmm “what on earth am I putting in my body when I eat this homogenised, plastic packaged, cranked out in large volumes fake food every day?”
What am I feeding my kids when I place a bowl of sugar encrusted cereal in front of them for breakfast in the morning?
Well, Dr Wayne Dyer got me thinking about this… a lot!
He was speaking to guests at a convention about visualising a gram of co***ne (for those of us who have never crossed over to that world, imagine if you will, a dime sized coin, a pound coin, a five rand coin. Pick a coin, any currency, it’s only for visual representation purposes.
Visualise this coin or gram of co***ne, whichever representation resonates for you…
Now imagine that one gram of co***ne or one coin represents one gram of sugar.
Using our new found knowledge and appreciation for the representation of one gram of sugar.
Let's put our new found awareness to the test…
Example:
A much loved and pretty “innocent” product, orange juice.
For every 150ml of juice (which is not a huge amount of juice)
You will consume 14g of sugar
(Think coins) That is 14 coins stacked up in a pile!
You think this is a "healthier" option because orange juice must be healthier than the fizzy drinks, its full of Vitamin C, right?
(Not even gonna mention the fizzy drinks here! Check the label for yourself the next time you're grocery shopping)
Example
Chocolate Mini Eggs
For every 100g (which is a small packet you could potentially consume in one sitting by yourself)
You will consume 69g of sugar
(Think coins) That is 69 coins stacked up in a pile!
You can find examples of this information on any label of pre-packaged items that you purchase off the shelf.
I’ll leave you for a moment to allow the penny to drop…
Now if that was the amount of co***ne you consumed in the time it took you to drink that 150ml of juice or guzzle that 100g bag of chocolate, you’d be dead… (and bankrupt)
Mind Blown yet?
This is how we consume daily!
This is legal!
This is mass produced!
And most of us graze on the sugary store bought products without ever giving it a second thought.
It's not to make you fearful or to be a judgmental Karen but rather to empower you with knowledge and to get you to think before you absent-mindedly consume.
Flipping the coin on this analogy, let's explore a helpful game plan:
Read the label every once in a while and make informed decisions
Be more mindful and purposeful in what you choose to consume
Encourage self-reflection by asking, “How does this food that I’m purchasing play a role in nourishing me and supporting my best, vibrant and more energetic life?"
Cultivate awareness of how your choices influence your body and overall wellness.
Select unprocessed, nature-nurtured foods, kissed by the sun, to support your body's optimal functioning.
