Did you know that we can’t sense and stress at the same time?

The goal of labour is to stay in the parasympathetic nervous system, our relaxation state.

If we think about the skin as our external nervous system we can see how touch regulates our brain and body chemistry and can have a beneficial and healing effect.

I like to say that our hands are an extension of our heart.

Positive, comforting touch can be a powerful tool to keep mothers anchored by stimulating senses and promoting the release of oxytocin and birth hormones.

Get in touch if you’d like to learn more about how you can incorporate therapeutic touch into your labour and birth preparation!

Our breath is the junction at which the conscious and unconscious control of our body meet.

Our breath provides us with a direct (and helpful) pathway to evoke our body's natural relaxation response.

Learning to master this powerful tool is an essential skill for our physical and mental wellbeing.

Stay tuned as I teach you some of my favourite exercises to practice better breathing. They’ve helped me learn to harness the power of the breath and are useful for all situations (including preparation for labour and birth).

The first forty days:

Looking at the first twelve weeks after birth with significance is a 'new' idea to western culture

However, the concept of a 'fourth trimester' is steeped in tradition of Eastern and Traditional cultures world-wide

The first forty days after birth are a period of great transition.

It is when mother and baby recover from the physical challenge of pregnancy and birth.

It is a time of adjustment for the whole family, where everyone learns settle in to life with your newest member.

For the most part it is a time of nurturing and bonding. However, there can be lots of physical and emotional changes, as well as changing dynamics within relationships.

Having a postnatal plan is a great way to set you and your family up for a successful fourth trimester.

Brainstorm ways you can create a 'womb-like environment' once baby is born. It helps to think about 4 main categories:

1. Bonding
2. Rest
3. Nutrition
4. Support

Our babies thrive best when eased into our world...as do our mothers.

I am very passionate about taking the time to create a postnatal plan and cover this topic (extensively!) in my Calmbirth classes.

Reach out if you'd like support with writing a postnatal plan, or to book into my upcoming workshops!

Hell yes 🙌🏼

Rites of passage are defined as ceremony & rituals used to mark significant life changes.

Birth is recognised as a sacred rite of passage by many cultures all over the world. It is a time of profound transformation shaping the baby, mother, family and community.

The experience of pregnancy and birth holds great power to change women. Dramatic changes occur in a woman’s body, brain, hormones and heart.

Rites of passage allow us to approach a time of transition with conscious awareness and move forward into a new identity with clarity and understanding. How we choose to treat pregnancy, to birth our baby and to care for our newborn sets the foundation for their life ahead, and our new life as parents.

It’s so important we honour and recognise the significance of this miraculous life event for ourselves, and support other families through their journey.

Individually, we can honour this significant event by understanding and reflecting on what’s happening/happened, educating ourselves on the process and our options, noticing how we are changing, tuning in to how we are feeling and sharing our experiences.

As a community we can come together to support families by encouraging a broader dialogue around birth, holistically supporting families with integrative care models, promoting access to education and most importantly; by listening and honouring individual stories. To rejoice, to cry, to grieve and to celebrate.

If you haven’t already I HIGHLY recommend reading Rachel Reed’s book ‘Reclaiming Childbirth as a Rite of Passage’. Articulate, informative, transformative and healing. It should be essential reading for all!

Pregnancy and childbirth can be described as the ultimate feminine expression of the ‘Heroes Journey’ - a narrative used around the world to describe the human experience.

The ‘Heroes Journey’ involves a hero who goes on an adventure, learns a lesson, wins a victory with that newfound knowledge, and then returns home transformed

Growing and birthing babies provides an opportunity for us to experience our power and potential as women...and move forward as mothers feeling aligned, strong and centred in our truth

This does not mean birth has to be 'natural' or without medical intervention

We experience this transformational potential by making informed and conscious decisions based on our understanding, intuition and the advice of our caregivers.

As a Calmbirth Educator my goal is to provide you with the knowledge, skills & inspiration for you to experience a conscious and connected birth, not a specific birth outcome

Send me a message if you’re in Perth and would like to experience a Calmbirth Group/Private class with me!

R E V E R E N C E

Bringing presence and consciousness to this rite of passage that is birth, rather than looking for a way out, allows us as women to face our deepest selves in all our vulnerability, power and beauty

It wasn’t until I became a midwife and found out about the process of ‘physiological birth’ that I realised birth was not something to be feared, but something to be revered!

Our bodies have been evolving for years and years to birth with ease and efficiency…it comes down to an incredible symphony of hormones that flow best when we feel safe and secure and relaxed…

In other words, birth works best when we get out of our head, and trust the intuitive wisdom of our body, and its ability to birth our baby.

Building this trust can take time (we’ve grown up bombarded by mixed messaging around women’s bodies and birth)…

One of the best places to start is by learning (go and google ‘physiological birth’). With new information we can unwrite our current story and form new (more helpful) beliefs.

There are so many fantastic resources available to help you on this journey…send me a message if you’d like a list of my top recommendations!

Birth happens in our subconscious mind...our conscious and subconscious beliefs about birth can impact our experience...

Have you ever stopped to think what are your beliefs around labour and birth?

Where do they come from? Are they helpful? Can you reframe them?

This exercise can be quite eye-opening!

Often we absorb the beliefs of others (our family, friends, community, culture) and carry these into our own experience without even realising…

With education, preparation and support we have power to reframe our beliefs; to explore and reduce fear and anxiety before we are in the thick of labour; and act to optimise the birth process.

I’d love to hear from you so please feel free to share any beliefs/insights in the comments below!

O X Y T O C I N

The hormone of love, calm and connectedness 🤍🤍🤍

Oxytocin levels increase during hugging, physical intimacy, or**sm, childbirth and breastfeeding.

Oxytocin switches on the reward centres in our brain- fostering a sense of social connection, empathy, sexual activity, and trust.

It reduces stress levels and makes us feel safe, connected and ‘in love’.

Oxytocin is also one of the key hormones of birth - oxy (fast) + tocin (birth).

It’s responsible for causing the rhythmic uterine contractions that bring our babies into the world and creates a euphoria that fosters a deep rooted connection and desire to protect this special little soul above all else…making birth like the best first date ever!

But we don’t have to give birth to become familiar with oxytocin…

We can all experience the effect of this hormone right now, simply by hugging someone special (for >6 secs) or taking a moment to sit and feel gratitude. It’s that warm, tingly buzz you can feel spreading from your heart to your entire body…

Try it and see!

PREPARE + SUPPORT + TRUST

As a midwife, I believe that there are 3 essential things you need to take with you into labour:

1. A plan for what YOU need to help you remain calm, clear and connected when faced with challenge

2. A birth team who make you feel safe, supported and STRONG

3. An open mindset that has trust in your incredible body’s ability to birth

(And plenty of snacks!)
