VE day celebration
On Friday at Kingfisher House Care Home, we came together to celebrate VE Day with both joy and remembrance.
We started the morning by baking and decorating delicious carrot cake cupcakes with our residents. During the war, sweet treats were a rare luxury, so recipes such as carrot cake were often used as a substitute. It was lovely to recreate these moments together and reflect on the importance of making the most of simple pleasures during difficult times.
Later in the afternoon, residents gathered to remember and honour those involved in VE Day. We sang along to some much-loved wartime songs including Weβll Meet Again, The White Cliffs of Dover, and Wish Me Luck as You Wave Me Goodbye. We then held a moment of silence to pay our respects to the brave soldiers who lost their lives during the war.
The songs were so popular amongst our residents that the singalong continued into the following morning during our craft session, bringing even more smiles, memories, and laughter to everyone involved.
To finish our celebrations, everyone enjoyed the homemade cakes baked earlier in the day, alongside a lovely cup of tea and a fun VE Day quiz and puzzles.
It was an emotional, meaningful, and enjoyable day for all involved, filled with reflection, togetherness, and treasured memories.
