Adult Acquired Flat Foot Deformity: Why Ultrasound Scanning Can Help 👣

Adult Acquired Flat Foot Deformity is a common cause of foot pain and disability, and accurate assessment is key to effective treatment. Ultrasound scanning is a safe, non-invasive tool that can provide valuable insights.

Benefits of ultrasound for Adult acquired flat foot deformity:

• Accurate diagnosis: Ultrasound can detect tendon tears, degeneration, thickening, or inflammation, which may not be obvious on physical exam alone.
• Assess severity: Helps determine whether the tendon is partially or fully compromised, guiding the intensity and type of treatment.
• Monitor progression: Scans can track changes over time, allowing clinicians to adjust rehabilitation or bracing strategies.
• Guide treatment decisions: Ultrasound can inform whether conservative care (orthoses, bracing, exercises) is likely to be effective or if surgical consultation is needed.
• Injection guidance: If injections are indicated, ultrasound ensures precise placement, reducing risk to surrounding structures.

Ultrasound is a valuable tool in managing PTTD. It helps clinicians tailor treatment to the tendon’s condition, monitor progress, and improve outcomes, all without invasive procedures.

Adult Acquired Flat Foot Deformity: How Foot Orthoses and Bracing Can Help 👣

Adult Acquired Flat Foot Deformitynoccurs when the arch of the foot collapses, often due to weakening of the posterior tibial tendon and supporting ligaments. While the condition can progress over time, foot orthoses and bracing can play a key role in managing symptoms and slowing progression.

How they help:
• Offloading: Custom orthoses or braces provide structural support, reducing strain on the tendon and ligaments.
• Reduce pain: By taking pressure off stressed structures, they can make walking and daily activities more comfortable.
• Delay or prevent surgery: In many cases, proper orthotic support can slow the progression of deformity and improve function.

Orthoses and braces are a crucial part of managing adult acquired flat foot. Supporting the foot properly can reduce pain, improve mobility, and protect the foot from further damage.

Do you have a painful, flat foot? 👣

Adult Acquired Flat Foot Deformity is a condition where the arch of the foot gradually collapses in adulthood, often leading to pain, stiffness, and difficulty walking.

Key points:
• Cause: Most commonly due to dysfunction or weakening of the posterior tibial tendon, which supports the arch of the foot. Other factors include arthritis, injury, or long-term overuse.
• Symptoms: Flattening of the arch, rolling in of the ankle, swelling and pain on the inside of the foot or ankle.
• Progression: The condition usually develops slowly. Early stages may cause only mild discomfort, but over time it can lead to significant deformity and functional limitations.
• Management: Early intervention can include supportive footwear, orthoses, and exercises. More advanced cases may require bracing or surgical correction.

Adult acquired flat foot affects function and mobility. Early assessment and treatment can prevent progression and reduce pain.

Shockwave Therapy for Achilles Tendinopathy 🦶

Achilles tendinopathy can be frustratingly slow to heal. Shockwave therapy is a treatment that’s gained attention, but how does it help?

• Stimulates healing: Shockwave delivers targeted energy to the tendon, encouraging tissue repair and improving blood flow
• Reduces pain: It can help calm long-standing tendon pain, making it easier to carry out exercises and daily activity.
• Adjunct, not replacement: Shockwave therapy works best when combined with a structured loading program and load management.
• Non-invasive option: Unlike surgery, shockwave is a non-invasive treatment with no downtime.

Bottom line:
Shockwave therapy doesn’t “fix” the tendon instantly, but it can stimulate healing and reduce pain when used alongside the right exercise and load management plan. For stubborn Achilles pain, it’s a valuable part of the toolbox.

Achilles Tendinopathy: Why Exercise is Key 🦶

Achilles tendinopathy occurs when the tendon is overloaded and isn’t coping with stress. The most effective way to rehabilitate it is through targeted exercise.

Here’s how exercise helps:

• Rebuilds tendon strength: Gradual, controlled loading encourages the tendon to adapt and become stronger.
• Improves tendon structure: Heavy, slow resistance exercises promote healthy collagen alignment.
• Reduces pain long-term: Structured exercise programs are proven to reduce symptoms more effectively than rest alone.
• Restores function: Strengthening the calf and lower leg helps you return to running, sports, or daily activities safely.
• Prevents recurrence: Tendons that are strong and well-conditioned are less likely to flare up again.

Exercise must be progressive and guided. Too much too soon can worsen symptoms, while the right program stimulates healing and restores function.

Rest alone won’t fix Achilles tendinopathy. Targeted, progressive exercises are the evidence-based cornerstone of recovery.

Achilles Tendinopathy Mythbusting 🦶

Achilles tendon pain is common, especially in runners or people who are on their feet a lot. But there’s a lot of myths floating around. Let’s clear them up.

❌ Myth 1: “It’s just inflammation.”
Fact: Most Achilles tendinopathy is a degenerative condition, not an inflamed tendon.

❌ Myth 2: “You need to rest completely.”
Fact: Resting entirely can actually make it worse. Gradual loading through guided exercises is key to rebuilding tendon strength.

❌ Myth 3: “Stretching will fix it.”
Fact: Strengthening exercises are the most effective evidence-based treatment.

❌ Myth 4: “Surgery is often needed.”
Fact: The vast majority of tendons improve with exercise therapy, load management, and sometimes adjunct therapies like shockwave therapy.

❌ Myth 5: “Supportive shoes or insoles don’t help.”
Fact: Appropriate footwear, heel raises or foot orthoses can help reduce the stress on the tendon and improve symptoms.

Achilles tendinopathy isn’t about inflammation or “weak” tendons. It’s about load, tissue adaptation, and the right rehabilitation. With a structured approach, most people recover without invasive treatments.

3. Nail debridement:
- Trimming, thinning or removing infected nail material to reduce fungal load
- Benefits: Can improve nail appearance and allow topical treatments to pe*****te better.

4. Nail removal
- Removal of the infected nail under local anaesthetic followed by the use of topical antifungal cream.
- Risks: Infection, permenant nail changes and recurrance of infection
- Benefits: Immediatley reduces fungal load, improves pe*******on and effectiveness of the topical treatments and can provide rapid symptomtic relief.

Fungal skin infection treatments

Fungal skin infections, like Athlete's foot, are common and usually not serious - but they can be stubborn if not treated properly. Here is a clear look at your treatment options:

👣 Topical treatments:
Creams, sprays or powders applied directly to the affected area.
Pros: Non-invasive, easy to use, effective for mild to moderate infections.
Cons: Must be used consistently, sometimes for several weeks.

👣 Oral Medications:
Prescription tablets for more severe or persistent cases:
Pros: Treats infections systemically, useful when topical treatments fail.
Cons: Requires medical supervision due to potential side effects and may interact with other medication.

👣 Lifestyle measures:
Keep your skin clean and dry
Wear breathable shoes and moisture wicking socks
Rotate shoes daily to allow them to fully dry

Bottom line: Fungal skin infections are treatable but can recur if underlying causes aren't addressed. Combining topical or oral medication with good foot hygiene gives the best chance at long term success.
