📚 Why Are We Still Testing Childhood?

We’re deeply disappointed that the government’s curriculum and assessment review hasn’t scrapped SATs.

At Where the Wild Ones Learn, we believe that 10- and 11-year-olds should be exploring their interests, climbing trees, writing stories, and playing outside — not losing sleep over exam scores.

One friend told us her son is sitting tests every two weeks. Every two weeks. That’s not education — that’s pressure.

SATs don’t measure creativity, kindness, resilience, or curiosity. They don’t reflect the magic of schema play, the joy of discovery, or the emotional growth that happens in real learning.

We see children thrive when they’re given space to wonder, not when they’re boxed into revision timetables.

We need a system that celebrates learning — not performance. That nurtures the whole child — not just their ability to tick boxes.

Let’s keep speaking up. Let’s keep sharing stories. Let’s keep asking: What kind of childhood do we want to protect?

✨❄️ Arctic Adventures & Winter Night Skies ❄️✨

Our current theme has taken us on a magical journey to the Arctic and into the wonder of the winter night sky. The children have loved creating their very own tin can lanterns — using hammers and nails to punch out patterns.

🔨 Some chose to design their own unique shapes, while others carefully taped constellations onto their cans and used them as guides to make constellation lanterns that twinkle just like the stars above.

🌌 This activity has been rich in schemas:

Trajectory schema – hammering nails, exploring movement and force.

Positioning schema – carefully placing holes to form patterns or constellations.

Connecting schema – linking dots to create recognisable star shapes.

Orientation schema – turning cans, aligning templates, and viewing lanterns from different angles.

🌱 And the learning outcomes have been just as bright:

Developing fine and gross motor skills through hammering and tool use.

Building early scientific understanding of constellations and the night sky.

Encouraging creativity and self-expression through unique designs.

Practising problem-solving and perseverance when working with tools and materials.

Fostering collaboration and communication as children shared ideas and compared their lanterns.

The lanterns now glow beautifully, reminding us that even in the darkest nights, children’s curiosity and creativity shine the brightest. 🌟

Watching kids use real tools isn’t reckless — it’s controlled risk. That’s how confidence grows. 🛠️ Every turn of the drill is a life skill in action. Today it’s a chicken coop, tomorrow it’s independence. 🌱

Our accreditation delves deeper into why risk matters. Check it out now!

🧠💬 Men in Childcare & The Reality of Childminding in 2025

So… my husband is in the process of registering as a childminder so he can work alongside me—and wow, the reactions have been eye-opening.

His male friends? Shocked. Some couldn’t believe he was “giving up” his career to do this. Others asked if he was “just helping out” or “babysitting.” And it made me wonder… is it because he’s a man, and they still see childcare as “women’s work”? Or is it because he’s highly educated, and they don’t see childminding as a real profession?

Either way, it’s been a fascinating mirror to hold up to society’s assumptions.

💡 Even my husband admitted he was surprised by how much training is involved. Despite watching me work for 7 years, he hadn’t realised the depth of what goes into being a registered childminder. Now he’s got a whole new respect for the role—and even said he feels guilty for ever seeing it as glorified babysitting.

Because here’s the truth: Childminders wear every hat imaginable. We’re educators, caregivers, policy writers, accountants, marketers, safeguarding leads, play facilitators, emotional anchors, and community connectors. We manage relationships with children, families, local authorities, and inspectors. We plan learning, track development, respond to trauma, and adapt to every need that walks through our door.

And we do it with heart, skill, and professionalism.

👨‍👧‍👦 So yes—men can be childminders. And they should be. Because children benefit from diverse role models. Because care isn’t gendered. And because the more we elevate the profession, the more we challenge outdated stereotypes.

To every man considering a career in early years: You are welcome. You are needed. You are capable. And to every childminder—regardless of gender—thank you for the invisible work that keeps our communities thriving.

Let’s keep changing the narrative. 💚

13/11/2025

She’s 7… and still pouring, mixing, scooping. Some might say she’s outgrown it. But I know better.

These are schemas — deep patterns of learning. Pouring and mixing? That’s the trajectory schema in action.

It’s how children explore movement, flow, cause and effect. It’s the foundation for scientific thinking, for cooking, chemistry, even emotional regulation.

So when she stirs mud into petals or pours water between jars for the hundredth time… I don’t stop her.

I smile. Because I see the future scientist, the chef, the artist, the child who knows how the world works — because she’s felt it in her hands.

Schemas don’t vanish with age. They evolve. And they’re worth celebrating.

Check our accreditation to see how you support schemas in action.
