The skin barrier is the outermost layer of the skin. Its job is straightforward: keep moisture in and keep irritants, bacteria and environmental damage out.

When it is functioning well, skin feels comfortable, balanced and resilient. When it is not, almost everything else becomes harder to manage.

The barrier is made up of skin cells held together by a mixture of lipids including ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids.

Think of it like a wall, with the cells as bricks and the lipids as the mortar holding them in place. When that mortar is intact, the structure holds. When it breaks down, gaps appear.

Those gaps are where the problems begin. Moisture escapes faster than the body can replace it. Irritants get in more easily. Skin becomes reactive, tight, sensitive and unpredictable.

Products that used to work stop working because the barrier can no longer absorb or respond to them properly.

What damages the barrier? More things than most people realise.
