We've Improved How You Book GP Appointments at Peterhead Health Centre

Starting 30th June, we’re introducing an improved triage-based system for all GP appointment requests — designed to help us deliver faster and more effective care.

When you call, our Reception Team will ask for some details about your concern to pass on to a GP who will then review this information and decide the most appropriate next step. This will be your own GP where possible.

Everything you share is completely confidential, and our Reception Team follows guidance from our Doctors every step of the way.

So from the 30th of June, when you call, we kindly ask for your patience to answer a few questions to help us help you.

Thank you for your understanding

During the month of April we had 67 hours worth of appointments missed, which is very disappointing.

Whilst acknowledging the occurrence of unforeseen circumstances, unattended appointments contribute significantly to reduced appointment availability and increased waiting times. This ultimately impairs system efficiency and the delivery of timely and effective patient care.

We therefore ask for your assistance in attempting to reduce the number of unattended appointments please:

1. Should you feel your appointment is no longer required, please inform the health centre to allow this time to be offered to someone else.
2. In the event of unforeseen circumstances, please inform the health centre at your earliest convenience to reschedule your appointment and allow us to offer your cancellation to someone else.

What is HIV PrEP?

PrEP stands for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis. Pre-exposure means it’s taken before s*x. Prophylaxis means to prevent disease – in this case to prevent you getting HIV. If taken correctly, it’s highly effective at stopping HIV being passed on.

HIV is a virus that affects your immune system if left untreated. The most common way to get HIV in the UK is by having s*x without a condom.

Due to a notable increase in flu and other respiratory illnesses within our community, we kindly request that patients consider wearing masks when attending appointments.

This simple precaution helps protect everyone’s health and reduces the spread of illness.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

🌟 How to Cope with the Winter Vomiting Bug 🌟

We have some important advice for dealing with norovirus, also known as the winter vomiting bug, after a recent increase in calls to the 111 service.

Norovirus is a stomach bug that causes vomiting and diarrhoea. While it can be very unpleasant, it usually goes away in about 2 days. Symptoms include:

🤢 Feeling sick (nausea)
💩 Diarrhoea
🤮 Vomiting
🤒 High temperature
🤯 Headache
😩 Aching arms and legs

Unfortunately, norovirus spreads easily and quickly. If you catch it, here’s what you should do:

☑️ Stay off work or school until at least 48 hours after symptoms have stopped.
☑️ Avoid visiting anyone in hospital during this time.
☑️ Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water, especially after using the toilet and before handling food.
☑️ Remember, alcohol-based hand gels don’t kill the virus.

To prevent spreading norovirus, maintain basic hygiene and cleaning:

☑️ Disinfect surfaces and objects that could be contaminated using a bleach-based household cleaner.
☑️ Wash clothes and bedding separately on a hot wash (60°C).
☑️ Don’t share towels and flannels.
☑️ Clean toilets and surrounding areas with a bleach-based household cleaner.

Dr. Ron Cook, NHS 24’s Medical Director, advises:
“If you experience sudden diarrhoea and/or vomiting, stay at home until you’re feeling better. There’s no treatment for norovirus, so you have to let it run its course. Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration and avoid giving fizzy drinks or fruit juice to children as it can make their diarrhoea worse. Babies should continue to feed as usual. You don’t usually need medical advice unless there’s a risk of a more serious problem. Alleviate fever or aches with paracetamol and get plenty of rest. If you or someone you’re caring for shows signs of dehydration, use special rehydration drinks from your local pharmacy. Once you feel like eating, try plain foods like soup, rice, pasta, and bread.”
