It's World Diabetes Day. Diabetes can impact people across all stages of life from childhood to later in life. Diabetic eye disease is caused when high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia) damage the blood vessels in the retina, which can lead to leakage of fluid and blood, as well as the growth of new, abnormal blood vessels.

However, with early detection and treatment, most people with diabetic eye disease can maintain their vision. However, if left untreated, it can lead to severe vision loss or blindness.

It's Diabetic Awareness Month.

Diabetes occurs when your body does not properly process food as energy. Your body either does not respond to or does not produce insulin, which is a hormone that delivers glucose (blood sugar) to the cells in your body. Having too much glucose in the bloodstream, outside the cells where it belongs, can lead to damage of the blood vessels and nerves that run throughout your body, including to the eyes.

Diabetic eye disease can include diabetic retinopathy, Macula Edema, Glaucoma and Cataracts.
