βοΈ Snow Safety & Falling Prevention Tips βοΈ
It doesnβt matter if youβre young or old β everyone is at risk of slipping over in icy conditions.
Whilst young people can break bones taking a tumble, the effects can be life-changing or even fatal for the elderly. One very common result of falls in the elderly is a fractured hip.
The following are some tips to lower the risk of injury due to slip and fall in snowy or icy conditions if you have to go out in this weather:
βοΈ Wear boots with rubber soles that can give you good traction on outdoor surfaces.
βοΈ Avoid walking on uneven surfaces wherever possible.
βοΈ Keep your hands out of your pockets when walking outside. You want to have your arms free to hold out to your sides to give you better balance if you feel yourself starting to slip.
βοΈ If you have to walk across an icy patch, take small, shuffling steps.
βοΈ Bending your knees slightly when walking outside in winter can reduce the likelihood of a fall.
βοΈ Avoid carrying large boxes or packages outside in the winter.
βοΈ Make a point of looking down at the ground before you get out of your car. If you have parked on a piece of ice, you may want to move to a different spot to avoid injury.
βοΈ We also advise older people to wear extra layers to protect more vulnerable parts of the body like the head, hips and spine in case they fall
Please take care, stay safe and enjoy the snow if it arrives!!! βοΈ βοΈπ·
