Can Essential Oils Actually Ease Headaches? We Sniffed Out The Science

"While they were once considered a pretty fringy, "woo-woo" wellness accessory—the kind your hippied-out aunt in Boulder would whisper about—essential oils are officially having a mainstream moment. The natural, highly concentrated liquids that contain chemical compounds from various plants are now used to help curb all sorts of ailments, from high stress to low libido. Experts say that the oils can help relieve headaches and migraines in some cases, as well—though more research needs to be done before they become a legitimate treatment for an achy head.
"Although there are some studies out there that show that people who smell essential oils have less severe headaches than those who don't, they aren't done well enough to be scientifically conclusive yet," explains Pamela Dalton, Ph.D., a research scientist at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia whose work focuses on the relationship between odor and emotional processes. "The problem with these studies is that there isn't an effective control group, as everyone who participates knows they are smelling oils because the aromas are so strong."

What she can say for sure? Headaches are often caused by stress—so essential oils may help curb the throbbing pain simply because they relax you. "Doing anything that relaxes you when you have a headache, from getting a massage to smelling an essential oil whose scent you truly enjoy, can be an effective therapy," Dalton explains.

Certified aromatherapist Amy Galper, founder of the New York Institute of Aromatic Studies and co-author of Plant-Powered Beauty, has some advice to help you get started. Here, she recommends three popular "beginner blends" that smell amazing—and will help you dip your toe into the essential oil waters.

Hazelnut No-Bake Brownies {raw, vegan, gluten-free}

12 ingredients

- 1 handful Cacao nibs
- 3/4 cup Cocoa powder or raw cacao powder, natural
- 1 cup Dates, pitted slightly packed
- 1/4 cup Maple syrup
- 1/8 tsp Sea salt, fine
- 3 pinches Sea salt, flaky
- 2 tsp Vanilla
- 1/4 cup Coconut oil, extra-virgin
- 1/2 cup Almonds, raw
- 3/4 cup Hazelnuts, whole raw
- 1 Hazelnuts
-2 tbsp Almond or hazelnut milk

Instructions

- Preheat the oven to 350ºF.
- Spread the hazelnuts on a small baking sheet and toast until
golden, 10-12 minutes.
- Let cool completely, then rub off as much of the loose skins as
want to come off.
- Place ¾ cup of the hazelnuts in a food processor, reserving the rest for garnish.
- Add the almonds, cocoa powder and salt.
- Process until finely ground, but still powdery.
- Scrape the nut mixture into a bowl and set aside.
- Add the dates and vanilla to the now-empty food processor and blend to a paste.
- Add the nut mixture, and process until a clumpy dough-like substance forms.
- Scrape this mixture into a 8x4 or 9x5-inch loaf pan lined with a sling of parchment paper and pack it into an even layer. Chill until needed.
- To make the ganache, combine the almond milk, coconut oil, maple syrup, cocoa powder and vanilla in a medium, heat-proof bowl.
- Set the bowl over a pot of gently simmering water, and whisk until melted and smooth.
- Remove from the heat and let cool slightly to thicken, whisking occasionally, 5-10 minutes.
- Pour the ganache over the brownies.
- Chill in the refrigerator until a bit firmer, 30 minutes.
- Chop the remaining 2 tablespoons of hazelnuts into large pieces.
- When the ganache has firmed a bit, sprinkle the hazelnuts, cacao nibs, and flaky salt evenly over the top. Chill until completely firm, 1 hour.
Use the parchment handles to lift the brownie out of the pan, and use a chef's knife to cut into 8 or 10 bars.
The brownies keep well, refrigerated airtight, for up to 1 week.

Research Finds Psilocybin's Positive Effects On Cancer Patients Endure For Years

"Almost five years after the original study, researchers at NYU have found a single dose of psilocybin can have long-lasting, positive effects on anxiety and depression when coupled with psychotherapy.

Back in 2016, researchers found psilocybin, a naturally occurring compound in psychedelic mushrooms, may offer cancer patients relief from depression, anxiety, and existential distress, as well as boost feelings of spiritual well-being. The benefits were immediate, and a follow-up study four and a half years later found them to be lasting, too.

As the longest spanning study on the effects of psilocybin on cancer patients, the findings give us important insight into the drug's potential benefits."

New Research Finds A Technique To Manipulate How We Process Trauma

"We put a lot of thought into how to improve our memory, especially as we age. But what about those memories we'd rather forget?

When something traumatic happens in our lives, it can result in any number of reactions, from PTSD to feelings of fear and hopelessness to even being "stuck" in the body, causing all sorts of issues.

What if there was a way to influence how our brains store emotional memories? Researchers from the University of Illinois believe they may have figured out how to do just that."

The Science-Backed Reason You Should Be More Spontaneous

"The responsibilities we take on as adults often require us to leave behind the simplicity of childhood. Though we can't ignore more pressing obligations, like working or raising a family, we can—and should—commit to keeping life interesting. In fact, recent research shows getting stuck in a rut, or sticking to a consistent routine, is bad for the brain.

A study published in the Journal of Gerontology: Psychological Sciences and Social Sciences found engaging in diverse activities can improve cognitive functioning throughout adulthood."

How Alcoholism Might Affect Your Brain, Even If You Don't Drink

"While scientists have recognized a link between genes and addiction, alcoholism is still largely misunderstood and hard to predict. In fact, even those who can manage their drinking or avoid alcohol altogether can still be affected by their family's history of drinking—and not just emotionally.

A study published in NeuroImage found participants with a family history of alcoholism lacked a specific function in the brain, often associated with addiction and alcoholism.

Researchers from Purdue University and the Indiana University School of Medicine analyzed the brains of 54 individuals and found typical brains undergo a process of "reconfiguration" after completing a mentally demanding task. But those with family histories of alcoholism skipped that phase."

Some quotes to hopefully lift your mood in this never ending rain...

"Don't knock the weather; nine-tenths of the people couldn't start a conversation if it didn't change once in a while."

"Too often man handles life as he does the bad weather. He whiles away the time as he waits for it to stop."

"Every storm runs out of rain, just like every dark night turns into day."

"Storms don't come to teach us painful lessons, rather they were meant to wash us clean."
