The Frith Centre A space for connection, exploration, reflection and growth. It encompasses a state of tranquility, security, and the absence of conflict.

Frith carries deep connotations of peace, harmony and tranquility within human societies, originating from Old English "friþu" and Germanic "frijo." The history of the word unveils its close connection to concepts of love and beloved. Rooted in ancient Anglo-Saxon culture, frith embodies a holistic sense of social order and justice, as well as inner peace. It represents not only the absence of war but also the presence of a harmonious and cooperative community. The word frith has endured throughout history, reflecting the timeless human yearning for a peaceful and balanced existence. Its significance resonates in various aspects of literature and society, reminding us of the fundamental values of respect, understanding, and unity. Come and find what frith means to you deep in the beauty of the South Downs National Park in the company of the local frith residents, including a small band of natural living horses, buzzards, mice, owls, voles and moles to name but a few.

Our Story

Learning is never complete, worlds are hidden within worlds and reveal themselves when eyes, hearts and minds are ready to perceive what else is there. After some years of learning and integration of seeing beyond, The Herd Centre is now open to those who have a desire for adventure of the extra-ordinary everyday.

If there is a part of you wishing to shake free from the shackles of a “domesticated” life, a wildish inclination to experience something else, a curiosity for exploration and questions that create other questions, then know that, that possibility exists.

To be clear we are not an Equine Assisted Learning centre, although that is a path we trod very briefly. We have moved beyond that and offer occasional facilitated experiences for those with a motivation to stay wild and cognitive and to experience the possibility of new ways of relationship with yourself, others and otherness.
