A man from Hailsham, who was given nine life-saving shocks after suffering a cardiac arrest, thanks the SECAmb clinicians that saved his life. 🚨

Now 50-years-old, Simon Ford and his partner Liz recently visited our Polegate Make Ready Centre, where he was reunited with Advanced Paramedic Practitioner, Matthew, Paramedics, Emily and Olivia, Student Paramedic, Hannah Lewis and Operational Team Leader Claire - some of the clinicians that saved his life earlier this year.💙

With more than 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happening every year in the UK, and fewer than one-in-ten patients surviving, early intervention is crucial and learning CPR could save a life.

Learning CPR can be done in as little as 15 minutes with free, online tools from the British Heart Foundation.

Giant hogweed (aka giant cow parsley) is a fairly common plant in the UK, we are seeing it everywhere at the moment, but did you know it is a toxic plant that can cause severe skin blisters*, burns and even blindness?

Toxic components in the leaves, stems, roots, flowers and seeds can be transferred to the skin by touch, and although these do not cause burning alone, they make skin sensitive to sunlight, which can then cause rashes, burns and severe blistering. How badly the skin is affected depends on the individual, but children are known to be particularly sensitive.

NHS guidance is to wash the area of skin with soap and water as quickly as possible and keep it covered.

If a burn appears, treat it as you usually would a burn:

• Stop the burn process as soon as possible.
• Cool the skin with cool running water for 20 minutes
• Cover the burn with cling film.
• Treat the pain from a burn with paracetamol or ibuprofen.
• Raise the affected area, if possible, to help to reduce swelling.

A massive well done to Justin from McDonalds who has undertaken a number of courses with First In Attendance Ltd at Knockhatch Adventure Park, he gave life saving CPR when he witnessed someone collapse. The successful outcome was no doubt in part to his early intervention and was critical to buy time until other emergency services arrived to assist.
