Should you start CPR or go fetch a defibrillator if you are on your own?
This is a question that I regularly get asked on my courses and I now have a definitive answer (highlighted in yellow):
"If you are on your own, fetch an AED only if you can get and apply it within 1 minute, otherwise, start CPR immediately." (pages 27 & 28 of the ERC guidelines 2025 - link in comments)
However, "each minute of delay in getting to defibrillation reduces the probability of survival by 10%," so personally if it took me 2 minutes to retrieve an AED, then the chances of survival are 80%, which are still favourable odds in my opinion.
The key is always knowing exactly where your closest defib is (see defibfinder.uk), and doing a recce so you can minimise any delay if you ever had to grab it for real.
