Apparently Monday was National Old Stuff Day?!

So it's very appropriate to share this first aid poster that I found in my mother-in-laws cupboard from 1970.

The main thing that intrigues me is the 'coma' position for unconscious casualties. I've always said the 'recovery' position is a ridiculous name for it, as rolling them over doesn't make them recover, but it also doesn't put them into a coma! I call it the 'safe airway' position when I'm teaching as that is what it does.

A few other things have changed since 1970, but I love that giving simple instructions for how to save a life are still as prevalent as ever.

What 'old stuff' have you re-discovered recently?

You never know when your first aid skills and knowledge may be required, but I always say that 'it is better to know it and not need it, than need it and not know it'.

Without Simon Parker's training, he hears his partner could have died in the incident.

Easter eggs are now everywhere! So a good time to share these top tips from Debbie - The Early Years Specialist. I especially like the one about the parent eating any mini eggs!!

Easter Egg Safety : An Important Reminder for Parents and Carers 🐣

Easter eggs are in shops earlier every year, but the message about small eggs and choking hazards shouldn’t wait until Easter.

Small, mini, or tiny solid chocolate and sugar-coated eggs can pose a serious risk to babies and young children.
Their size and shape are similar to a child’s airway, which means they can get lodged and cause choking even when children seem old enough to handle them.

Practical safety steps for parents and carers:
• Always supervise children when eating
• Ensure children sit down and do not walk or run with food
• Crush mini eggs inside a food bag before giving them
• Cut eggs lengthwise into quarters, similar to grapes
• Offer hollow eggs to children and enjoy the small ones yourself
• Stay confident with paediatric first aid and choking procedures by taking a certified course with Worsley Training ( our partner in practice )

It was International Epilepsy Day last week.

This is one of the best infographics I have found that clearly lays out how to help someone who is having a seizure. In the UK, obviously call 999 instead of 911 (but it does actually work here as so many kids know it from tv).

There are 100s of different types of seizures. I recently heard about a lady who stripped naked in a supermarket, climbed into a freezer and started washing herself with some frozen peas. She could hear and see other people but not understand them. So distressing and very tricky to deal with but do ensure their privacy - I can imagine people taking photos and videos.

However, anyone having a seizure all need loads of reassurance. When they are coming round, tell them simply what has happened and what is happening now and repeat it. Stay with them until someone they know arrives or assist them to get home.

Happy half term!

Our son received a direct hit to his head from a hockey ball at school, at the end of last week.

The medical staff checked him over and kept an eye on him and then sent him home with this sheet in his bag.

It is a very comprehensive list of symptoms to look out for, so thought it was worth a share.

However relying on a child to tell their parents that they had a head injury, and then remembering to dig the sheet out of the bag is not ideal, so I have emailed the school questioning this system.

When I am teaching in schools, I hear a mixture of methods, from stickers, phone calls, verbally at pick up, emails and notes in bags, so wondering what your school does?

College Fields Montessori Nursery School

We had a fantastic visit from Louise Worsley of Worsley Training

Louise is a brilliant engaging first aid trainer- all my team have completed their paediatric first aid training with her.

Today she came to College Fields Montessori to summarise our-REAL HEROES topic.

Louise explained how and when to call the emergency services and showed us how to stop a bleed and bandage breaks and cuts. Totally engaging for us all, as always. Thank you so much again.

“Throughout 2025, we have been collecting nominations for the South West Business & Community Awards, and I am delighted to inform you that you have been shortlisted by our independent judging panel for both:

🔹️ The Outstanding Contribution to the Community Award

🔹️ The Lifetime of Achievement Award

We received over 1,578 nominations this year, so being shortlisted is a significant achievement. You should be extremely proud to be recognised among the region’s most outstanding businesses, charities and individuals.”

My nominations were due to having taught potentially lifesaving skills to over 6000 children since moving to Wiltshire in 2018. In addition, my community defibrillator sessions in village halls are becoming increasingly popular, giving people the confidence to look after their neighbours if ever needed.

This is all very exciting for me and my little business, so I’ve found a couple of other members of the Business Women in community who are also nominated and keen to attend the awards ceremony on 11th March in Swindon and am looking forward to getting dressed up and having a fun evening!

Is your community group eligible for a free, BHF-funded defibrillator?

Applications are closing soon, so see how you can apply at this link:

https://www.bhf.org.uk/how-you-can-help/how-to-save-a-life/defibrillators/apply-for-a-free-defibrillator-for-your-community

You must be applying on behalf of a non-profit community-focused group e.g. sports club, parish council, church or community centre.

Interestingly one of their conditions is that it is available 24/7 in a non-lockable cabinet. Previous advice for public access defibrillators is that they are kept in locked cabinets due to theft and vandalism.

So removing the need to call 999 to get the unlock code saves valuable time for someone having a cardiac arrest.

How was your January? I love this poem, as it sums up most people's sentiments!

We are totally back into the swing of things with 9 courses over the month. They were our usual good mixture of:

🔹️ 2 INSET days for school teachers at Godolphin School and Luckley House School
🔹️ 3 private courses for Inspirations Hairdressing Fairford, Roc Technologies Limited and the Hungerford Food Community
🔹️ 1 public paediatric course and 1 public adult course at The Open Space in Marlborough
🔹️ A 2 hour Zoom refresher for Youth Adventure Trust
🔹️ A private 90 minute CPR and Defibrillator session for a group of friends in Pewsey

February is looking similar and soon it will be Spring. I spotted our first snowdrops over the weekend, which always make me smile!
