This Saturday 13th September is World First Aid Day, which raises awareness about the crucial role of First Aid in saving lives.

The mission is to encourage everyone to commit to learning first aid and equip themselves with the skills needed to act swiftly and effectively in emergencies.

Learning First Aid empowers you to make a difference, by providing immediate, potentially life-saving assistance in emergencies.

So if you are local to me in Wiltshire, then my public classroom courses are at www.worsleytraining.co.uk/book-a-course or you can access over 200 eLearning courses at https://worsleytraining.co.uk/online-first-aid-courses/ and get 10% off with my code UK-Worsley.

Is it time you refreshed your first aid skills?

Hello September!

Our kids have returned to school, and Worsley Training is once again back up to full speed.

Enjoying time off with my family is always a treat and it helps the work-life balance that I strive for as a business owner.

A couple of highlights from our summer were a motorhome trip to Scotland (here we are, pictured at the summit of Ben Nevis) and attending a phenomenal Coldplay concert at Wembley.

Looking ahead, the course diary is filling up nicely. In the coming weeks, I will be delivering first aid training to a diverse range of groups: nursery staff, estate gardeners, food bank volunteers, yoga teachers, an over 60s club, an NCT group, a school PTA, and two public courses, which always have a wonderful mix of individual professions.

Hope you had a wonderful summer too?

I taught my final first aid course before my summer break last week. It was a 1 hour Zoom call for approx 60 volunteer leaders at The Ramblers.

Myself and Rupert from Really Good First Aid, discussed what to put in their first aid kits and how to manage common incidents, then answered various questions ranging from removing ticks to giving medication.

But now, as I do every August, my business hat comes off and my mummy hat goes on.

So for the next few weeks, I will be having fun with these 2 wonderful human beings, who are growing up too fast (and hubbie too when he can join us). We are looking forward to 2 weeks in a motorhome driving from Wiltshire to Ben Nevis and back, with various activities each way!

I will stay on top of the emails and admin but will be quiet on social media. Do get in touch if you want to book a private course on hello@worsleytraining.co.uk or check out my public course dates and locations at www.worsleytraining.co.uk/book-a-course

Then business as usual will resume in September, once they are happily settled back at school.

Have a great August! 😊

I'm not usually a football fan but if you are are English, you can't help being swept up by the excitement of the fantastic Lionesses victory last night again!

So if football fever has also taken over your family and they are endlessly in the garden or local park kicking a ball around, what should you do if they get a soft tissue injury?

➡️ Rest – stop any exercise or activities and try not to put any weight on the injury. But don't totally immobilise it as little movements will stop it becoming stiff.

➡️ Ice – apply a wrapped ice pack (or wrapped bag of frozen peas) to the injury for up to 20 minutes every 2 to 3 hours.

➡️ Compression – wrap a bandage around the injury to support it, going up and down the limb nearly to the next joints to spread out the pressure.

➡️ Elevate – keep it raised on a pillow as much as possible to help reduce the swelling.

Huge congratulations to the England women 👏

Some upcoming minor changes for anyone working in EYFS from 1st September, courtesy of Debbie - The Early Years Specialist - thanks for the tag!

My next public PFA is on Thursday 18th September in Marlborough. All details and online booking at https://worsleytraining.co.uk/book-a-course/paediatric-first-aid-marlborough-wiltshire-2/

If you work in the Early Years Sector, you should be fully aware of the new EYFS coming into force on September 1st.
We have picked out some of the key updates and will be sharing them this week to help our followers feel prepared.

* Paediatric First Aid *

Paediatric First Aid for Trainees

From September 1st , apprentices, students and trainees must hold a valid paediatric first aid certificate before they can be counted in staffing ratios.

This means every adult working directly with children must be ready to respond in an emergency. If you are supporting trainees or new starters, make sure they know what's required and have time to get their training in place.

Please Note:
* Apprentices under 17 cannot count in ratios at all, regardless if they hold a PFA certificate
* When counting trainees in ratio ensure they are competent and working towards a qualification

Settings are responsible for identifying and selecting a competent training provider to deliver their PFA training.

The Early Years Specialist's "Partner in Practice" Worsley Training is worth checking out for all your PFA training

Whilst children are eating there should always be a member of staff in the room with a valid paediatric first aid certificate.

"Before a child is admitted to the setting the setting must obtain information about any special dietary requirements, preferences, food
allergies and intolerances that the child has, and any special health requirements. This information must be shared by the setting with all staff involved in the preparing and handling of food. At each mealtime and snack time the setting must be clear about who is responsible for checking that the food being provided meets all the requirements for each child.

The setting must have ongoing discussions with parents and/or carers and, where appropriate, health professionals to develop allergy action plans for managing any known allergies and intolerances.
This information must be kept up to date by the setting and shared with all staff."

The first needle-free treatment for life-threatening allergic reactions will now be made available in the UK as a nasal spray.

I posted about Neffy last November when it was approved for use in the US, and said I would update you when they made it over here. They now have, as the MRHA (our medicines regulator) has just approved the drug EURneffy for emergency use - https://www.gov.uk/government/news/mhra-approves-adrenaline-nasal-spray-the-first-needle-free-emergency-treatment-for-anaphylaxis-in-the-uk

Allergy campaigners welcome this and say it provides an ‘easier and more accessible’ alternative to injectable epipens, which are currently used to treat severe reactions, known as anaphylaxis.

‘We know that some people are reluctant to use the current adrenaline auto-injectors due to a fear of needles and hurting someone. This can delay administering adrenaline, and in a food allergy emergency every second counts.'

The Food Standards Agency says up to 2 per cent of adults and 8 per cent of children in the UK live with a food allergy.

EURneffy, which contains adrenaline, is intended for use in adults and children who weigh 30kg (66lb) or more (so not for those currently with a junior EpiPen), and can be used even if people have colds or blocked noses.

It is a single dose nasal spray that delivers its entire contents (2mg) upon activation. People are reminded the plunger should not be pressed before inserting the product into the nostril, otherwise the single dose will be lost.

A spokeswoman for the drug firm behind the spray, ALK, said: ‘The market launch in the UK is expected within the coming months once market access negotiations are completed.’

So once an NHS list price has been agreed and the product is available, doctors will be able to prescribe the nasal spray.

It's important to note that this option may not replace the adrenaline auto-injector, as we have yet to see how it would perform in comparison.

Currently if someone is going into anaphylactic shock, please adminster their EpiPen (or equivalent), call 999, place them in the shock position and be ready with a second AAI pen if required. A quick reminder of how to administer one can be seen at https://worsleytraining.co.uk/anaphylaxis-pens/

Are you off on a summer holiday soon? If so, where are you off to?

Don't leave it to the last minute to check you have enough of any regular medication and also that any occasional medication is still in date.

And while you are there - is your first aid kit complete?!

Have a wonderful time!

Thanks for being such fun participants!! I can highly recommend The Rowdey Cow if you are near Devizes and fancy a yummy ice cream / coffee / lunch, especially if you have children as they have a playground, football pitch and lots of animals!

A couple of weeks ago, Rhys, Kelly-Anne, and Carl all completed their first aid training! 🎉

At The Rowdey Cow, keeping our team (and our visitors!) safe is a top priority — and we’re proud to have more certified first aiders on board. 💚

Huge thank you to Louise from for delivering such a brilliant and engaging session!

Hello new followers 👋

Time to share my story again to give you reasons to believe in me and my business.

I'm Louise Worsley and I've been teaching first aid for over 18 years. I started out as a geography teacher in a secondary boys school and loved the teaching but loathed all the marking and paperwork.

So when I discovered I could get paid to travel the world, I packed a rucksack and became an expedition leader for 8 years covering the globe on foot, horseback, bicycles and yachts.

For this role I had to be suitably qualified as a medic and inevitably dealt with a variety of first aid incidents and illnesses. When it was time to settle down I decided to put the PGCE to further use passing on my experience, and Worsley Training was born.

We now have 2 children who often test my paediatric knowledge and I still partake regularly in a variety of outdoor sports when time allows. All of these experiences are shared on my courses to bring first aid to life.

Keeping the work / life / family balance is a daily juggle, but I wouldn't change a thing!

Do we have anything in common?!

"People can be scared of breaking the ribs when performing CPR, so don't apply enough pressure for it to be effective.

But if they use the device and hear the clicks under each compression, they know they are performing CPR correctly and will know that they have done everything they can to save the person."

A new award winning plastic device, CPR+Aid, may help users use the correct force when giving CPR for real, as it gives feedback through Annie-like clicks, when placed on a human chest.

There are 3 sizes for different ages and body types. The designer said his dream would be to "see the device in first aid boxes".

What do you think? Anything that helps save lives is fantastic in my opinion but whether they will actually be to hand at the crucial moment?

It's been a while since I posted about my public courses, which I run regularly in Marlborough.

They are for individuals to book onto and I give a 10% discount for 4 or more bookings on the same or consecutive courses.

Each course has options for number of hours and level of accreditation.

"Very well run, informative and enjoyable" was how one participant described their recent session.
