Did you know that Autism is more commonly diagnosed in boys than girls? π§©
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is diagnosed at a higher rate in boys compared to girls. A review of studies by the National Autistic Society shows that the ratio of males to females with autism ranges from 2:1 to 16:1, with the most recent estimate being 3:1. The exact reasons behind this difference remain unclear, and while several theories have been proposed, none have been definitively proven.
It's important to note that while autism is diagnosed more frequently in boys, girls may face unique challenges and often go undiagnosed for longer periods. One reason for this could be that girls are more likely to "mask" their autistic traits, which we have written about in our blog www.gesherac.co.uk/autistic-masking-in-girls/
Many theories to explain the diagnosis gap have been put forward, but none have been conclusively proven. Some of these theories can be read about on the NAS website www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/topics/identity/autistic-women-and-girls
